When I wrote the brief for this contest, this was the style of shot I had in mind. The range of excellent entries to the contest made me reconsider my original preconceived ideas and that is reflected in my Top Ten choices and the images that I have commended. I enjoyed that challenge to my original thoughts - so thank you all for that. Whilst judging, I also made the deliberate choice not to comment on the reasons for my choices as I believe that images should speak for themselves and, as the range of entries had moved the goalposts, it felt as though any comments I made would read like a series of mini-essays in self-justification for stretching my original brief. So, my Top Ten choices are simply presented here in my chosen order and I hope my subjective choices will speak for themselves. Nonetheless, huge congratulations to everyone who made the Top Ten and very special bragging rights to this #1 shot of Bruges at night when the buzz of cafe society is winding down. Thank you for your entry and very well done.

Cafés have their very own identity and culture. This contest is about café culture. The design, the environment, the style of cafés and, if you choose, the interactions of the people in cafés. It really is that straightforward ... except ... and this is the crunch point of the brief: please note that this contest is about cafés. It is not about pubs. They are different. This contest is also not an invitation to submit portraits that may have been taken in a café. The brief also exludes close up shots of coffee, drinks, food, beer taps, coffee machines etc.. Otherwise, this contest is simply about the environment - including the people - that make up café culture. Enjoy!
