Capture Colour

April 2024

Many architectural images found their way into this round, but this one jumped out for its vibrant energy. The long exposure blurs most of the hard textures, allowing us to focus on the colour alone – almost an inverse technique to a gritty black and white image. Well done on seeing the potential in this scene.

We love the colour relationships in this shot, which are not overpowering but strong enough that we are drawn into the scene and guided around the frame. Each colour works by itself but, like the best images from this round, they work better together to add drama to the subject.

Not all colour shots have to be bold and brash. The subtle colours in this scene are realistic and available to see in the world around us. The subtle colour gradient from the blues at the top of the frame to the lower kelvin reds and yellows at the bottom also gives the frame a nice weight. Well done.

Lines and shapes featured heavily in entries to this round. The minimalism of the surrounding detail ensures the heavy colours at the bottom of the frame don't overwhelm the scene but allow the abstract nature of the environment to shine through. The addition of the human figure breaks it up nicely too.

Sometimes simple is best and this everyday scene demonstrates the situation perfectly. These girls' outfits stand out against the clean background and work off each other to fill out the colour palette of the scene. It's a seemingly mundane scene, but each area of the frame furthers the colourful theme, making the whole shot more about the colour interactions. Well done.

This is a fun shot, which integrates an exciting artwork with real-world elements. We received many images of colourful art, but what this shot has that others lacked is three-dimensionality. The boys are a human element which gives the shot context and depth, while the abstract nature of the wall, artwork and window remain.

The top-down angle of this shot limits the context and allows the viewer to focus on the colour interactions in the scene. It almost looks set up for a photograph! The triangular arrangement of the three subjects is perfect too, offering the ideal balance. A well-constructed frame that makes the most of the colour available!

It is the movement that makes this scene. Rather than a static colour interaction, the running girl creates a flash of colour against the canvas-like area of yellow material. Again, it is a simple shot that works because of its emotional resonance and real-world base. A great shot from an interesting angle.

The colour contrast is what drew us to this image. The composition is intriguing and focuses our attention on the subject, through the classic frame-within-a-frame device. It's simple but aesthetically pleasing and concentrates on shape and tone. Nicely spotted and put together, proving that colour images can be minimalist too.

A lot is going on in this shot! The details, shapes and colours all come together to form a tapestry of interest and it's tough to know what to look at first! This might be seen as a negative aspect in other situations, but the frame is neatly divided, meaning each area is isolated. This allows us to appreciate each zone on its merit. Well done.
