Childhood

November 2024

I was surprised to see that this unique capture, that ended up straight into my top 10, was shot with an iPhone. It goes to prove that even though equipment has its limitations, amazing work can be created with the right dose of talent and creativity. This image, for instance, definitely stood out from the rest. Even though many images of children at the beach were submitted to the competition, no other was captured from this point of view. The fast movement is frozen to perfection, the water razor-sharp against the soft sky behind it. The choice of turning the image into black and white is wise indeed. With colour off the table, the viewer can fully take in the exhilarated expressions on the boys' faces, the true delight of this beautiful image.

This is a truly wonderful and enchanting capture of young boys on an adventure. Every detail in this image is functional and well thought-out. From the subjects' body positions, in motion and at the right angle to reveal the presence of backpacks and walking sticks, to the tall grass framing them, to the low sun that creates a magical golden haze, enhancing the debris by their legs. It's an image that tells a story, that brings the viewer back to those carefree days spent exploring in nature - the only worry that to be home in time for dinner. This fantastic capture is thoroughly deserving of first place.

I found myself smiling whilst looking at this image. It's joyous, it's dynamic: it's pure boy childhood. The photographer managed to (excellently) capture a significant moment in the football match, one that's loaded with adrenaline and anticipation. That's the shot's first strong suit. Technically, I love how the F2.8 aperture nicely blurs the background, allowing it to not interfere with the already busy scene in front. This way, the main scene, perfectly sharp (water splashes included), beautifully stands out, undisturbed. It's an image that screams energy and freedom, and there's absolutely nothing not to like about it.
