Light is the first thing that caught my eye in this shot. It hits the top silhouette of the man just right, so we can make out his presence and what he's doing clearly without revealing other (perhaps unnecessary) details. At the same time, it hits the smoke creating a lovely haze that adds incredible interest to the image. The mix of the man working outdoors, the net behind the subject, and the sepia colour grading, reminds of scenes from 50s movies. This is indeed a beautiful image with a story to tell. Well done!

Peace and stillness are perfectly captured in this ethereal image. The subject's dark silhouette is striking against the white mist rising from the water, easily creating an ethereal landscape, made even more soothing and surreal by the warm colour toning of choice. Personally, I love a shot that tells a story and leaves the imagination to wonder. And that's exactly what this image is doing. Who is this man and what is he doing? Where in the world is he? The viewer is compelled to keep on looking at the image to find out more clues to the puzzle. A beautiful, extremely serene and calming shot. Well done!

I have seen many shots of the canyon, but this is certainly one of the most creative ones I've seen. I like how the photographer chose to shoot from an angle where we don't only see one face of the canyon, but two, and they complement each other in shape so well, like pieces of a puzzle waiting to be joined. The cool colour toning strips the canyon of its distinctive warm colours, making this image even more interesting and slightly abstract. The lines on the canyon, perfectly sharp and enhanced by the contrast of the shot, are in perfect contrast with the smooth milkiness of the sky beyond. What a great image. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s <a href="https://www.photocrowd.com/photographer-community/">Leaderboard</a>.** The toning of photographic prints was a commonplace practise that lent a different colour to the print, usually either a brown/sepia or blue tone. It was also thought in most cases to improve the archival quality of the print. It worked by replacing the metallic silver in the print’s emulsion with a different silver compound, such as silver sulfide in the case of sepia toning. Nowadays of course a tone can be applied more straightforwardly, and with less potential health impacts, using our post processing software. It can be a fun way to play with your imagery and create a completely different look and feel. Images submitted to the contest must be black and white images that have had a single tone applied to the whole image.
