Colour Toned Images

September 2022

A beautifully captivating image that immediately caught my attention. The fact that the subjects and the rocks in the foreground are mere stark silhouettes against the white cloudy sky, gives the shot a pleasant 'fantasy' twist. The flying birds in the background add incredible interest to the image, almost looking like the boy's figurative thoughts, fluttering around his head. I almost wish the young child sitting on the high boulder had been the only human in the picture, but even with the other figure sitting next to him, the composition remains strong. The subtle colour grading works well and enhances the fantasy-like look of this beautiful image. Well done!

I love the sense of movement and dynamism conveyed by this shot, given by the interaction between the horses and even more by the clear feeling of wind through their hair. The detail is crisp and the contrast is enough to enhance the tones of both animals, while lovely soft catchlights can be seen in their eyes, enhancing their presence to camera. The subtle sepia colour grading gives this beautiful image a timeless feel, like a painting waiting to be hung. Well done!

Crisp, symmetrical, architectural shots can be a feast for the eyes, and this image most certainly is. It caught my attention from the moment I saw it, scrolling through hundreds of others. The composition is beautifully crafted: with water flowing in the foreground and down the canal that stretches all the way towards the horizon, perfectly framed by the large stone steps in the bottom and the angular buildings in the top corners of the frame. The overall high key lighting of the shot, matched with the subtle sepia colour grading, gift the image with extremely pleasant milky tones that are a pleasure to look at. Beautiful shot, well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked below 1000 in this week’s <a href="https://www.photocrowd.com/photographer-community/">Leaderboard</a>.** The toning of photographic prints was a commonplace practise that lent a different colour to the print, usually either a brown/sepia or blue tone. It was also thought in most cases to improve the archival quality of the print. It worked by replacing the metallic silver in the print’s emulsion with a different silver compound, such as silver sulfide in the case of sepia toning. Nowadays of course a tone can be applied more straightforwardly, and with less potential health impacts, using our post processing software. It can be a fun way to play with your imagery and create a completely different look and feel. Images submitted to the contest must be black and white images that have had a single tone applied to the whole image.
