Such beautifil light in this image I love it. It really elevates this iconic scene. The super wide aperture gives this beautiful softness to the foreground and along with the light creates a real dreaminess to the scene. A wonderful picture well done.

I loved the snow in this image. It gives a movement to the scene and mutes the already muted tones to give an etherial feel. Fantastic echoes in the composition too with the columns leading to the tree, from man made to nature; plus they are corinthian columns with that beatifully ornate capital repeating the natural shapes behind.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** A feature of classical architecture in its many iterations through the centuries, columns and colonnades (rows of evenly spaced columns usually with a roof or arches connecting them) make an interesting subject for the photographer. Leading lines abound, either looking up at columns, or along colonnades. Or if symmetry is more your thing, there’s usually plenty of that to be found too. Classical columns can be very large, and including human elements in the scene can provide welcome scale. By definition colonnades can also be rows of other tall, evenly spaced objects such as trees, which might add some interesting variety to the contest.

A wonderfully dramatic photograph. A fantastic use of black and white here to add to that drama. This iconic Edinburgh landmark embellished by the hazy sky really makes it pop out. And the lack of people adds an interesting eerie feel to the scene too.
