Composition - negative space

Negative space in photography refers to the space around the main subject. Specifically it is space that dominates most of the frame but is largely free of distractions, and leaves all the attention to be had by the main subject (the positive space). Images shot with lots of negative space will often have the subject placed around the periphery of the shot, off to the side, or alternatively dead centre. It’s a less-is-more approach to filling the frame, and one with often satisfying results.
