Dark Clouds

October 2023

We get a real sense of isolation and drama in this photograph. The menacing skies above the saturated field with the oil derrick standing alone, perfectly positioned by the photographer to the left of centre. The highlights and shadows are well controlled and the warm colors of the land work so well against the greys and whites in the sky. This is a brooding image that takes us on a journey. A classic composition and beautifully photographed scene. Well done.

This photograph really does give us a fantastic overview of the sprawling scale of a city. The monochromatic greys are broken by the wonderful pocket of directional light coming through a break in the clouds. This picture shows us how the clouds can completely darken a space and control the look of a city whilst also giving us a glimpse of what all photographers want - light. The high camera angle and wide aperture allow us to see eveything in sharp focus and the photographer has controlled the exposure very well. This is a great example of seeing light in a larger context. Great capture.

The drama is there to see in this stunning composition. The photographers ability to get high within the landscape has produced this stunning visual panorama of the rolling hills and break between land and sky. The sweeping view gives us a real insight into how clouds allow light to fall into certain pockets within the landscape and shape highlights and shadows infront of our eyes. The use of black and white really creates tension from the dark skys above the land. I can imagine sitting above this view looking down and contemplating life. This is a powerful visual image that works within the traditions of fine art landscape photography. Superb.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Moody skies and shaded landscapes here, as we give some attention to less favourable weather. Dark clouds can be super-atmospheric, and turn the sky into a real feature of your images. In portrait photography they can be a great setting for some more edgy portraiture, or perhaps a perfect mirror for your subject’s mood.
