There can be great beauty in poor focus, to be considered as a real creative tool. But like all creative tools, it should only use when there are very good reasons and particular conditions. It is the case of this lovely image. The few just hinted elements, the wonderful colors, the perfect exposition, the bold vertical composition and the right level of blur allow this image to speak loud. Many congratulations well done!
This work is a great example of the out of focus technique, where it is right the lack of focus that really makes the shot what it is. The black and white conversion works properly and it hugely introduces a great mood to the picture. Even the composition is very good where the two dark blurred figures are placed right against the bright areas created by the reflected light on the smooth ground. Congratulations for catching the moment and thanks for sharing!
Bold choice to apply the out of focus technique to a portrait, but the photographer won the challenge here. The perfect amount of blur creates a lot of honor to the subject and kindles the viewer thought and creativity about the personality of the subject himself. The dramatic light, the black and white, the expression and the choice of looking away from the camera increase the feeling of a person immersed in his thoughts. Wonderful work, congratulations!
I like the way the out-of-focus has been used here to "tell the story". Even the use of black and white really strengthens this image, making the viewer focus on the scene and on the "hand in hand" detail. Probably just a bit overexposure on the sky but pretty normal due to the strong light of the scene and the wide aperture that the out of focus technique requires. It's only a small point though, as overall it's a great shot. Congratulations and thanks for sharing!
This photo caught my attention at the first glance. When using the out of focus technique, there’s a fine line between creating an image that looks artsty and cool and creating one that looks like an error. This is undoubtedly an example of an excellent use of this technique for an image that breaks more than one rule. The few simple elements are set against a large negative space at the bottom of a bold vertical composition. The light and the color palette are lovely. Smart the idea of including also some background details to point out even more the out of focus of the subject. A very good representation of the "less is more" concept for a great work. Many congratulations and thanks for sharing!
There is no better way to describe "la Ville Lumière" than... by using its own lights! And there is no better way to make lights the absolute protagonists than by using the out of focus technique. The choice of including the iconic symbol of the city in the composition is very clever and effective. It makes the difference. Congratulations on a beautiful image!
Shooting an image in out of focus definitely needs an eye for art and a lot creativity. This is for sure the case of this photo where the photographer doesn't try to clog the frame with too many elements, playing with lights and colors instead. The result is an almost surreal effect which is very pleasing. Congratulations and thanks for sharing!
Great and funny story in this photo. Thanks to the smart and creative composition, the blurred subject in foreground and his pose, it might look as the man at the phone is talking about the group of people on the background left on focus. Very interesting application of this technique. Congratulations on your creativity!

The pose very unique and an action very interesting make the viewer stick his eyes onto is really some winning attributes for this out of focus photography. Good choice to desaturate the colors to point out the contrast between the black and white in the scene. Probably only due to an obligatory choice (logistic or commercial), the composition is a little unbalanced but it's only a small point though as overall, it's a very great job. Congratulations!

I like this image because I feel like there's a story being told. The choice of a shallow out of focus, the lighting, the weather conditions, the colors and the scene draw the viewer and you can almost feel yourself looking at a daily scene of an half century ago. There's a real emotion in there. A lovely photo, thanks for sharing!

Learning the photographic ropes involves working out how to ensure that your images are well composed, well exposed, sharply focussed and nicely balanced. In this occasional series of contests titled “Deliberately…” we’ll explore the fun that can be had when we produce images that don’t conform so strictly to these rules. Here we play fast and loose with the focussing ring, the plane of focus, and/or a bit of camera movement, and reduce the sharpness down a notch or two.
In this image the blur makes the shot very compelling for the viewer. The out of focus induces some kind of curiosity about the scene. Is it a train incoming through a gallery? Is it the work in a mine? Or is it just a bulb framed between two similar elements? It doesn't matter as the photo already cought the attention. A good work, thanks for sharing!
