One of the classic nocturnal views of Tokyo, finished with style. The contrast between the warm glow of Tokyo Tower and the cool blue of the dense urban sprawl works superbly; the way in which the blue tone spreads into the sky rather than the backdrop becoming a slab of lifeless black keeps things interesting. You really get a sense of scale with this shot: the Tower dominates Tokyo's skyline, and the choice of viewpoint combined with the compression effect of the long focal length gets this across here.
Shooting at night heightens the technical challenges of photography. How do you compose, focus and expose in the dark? It can be hard enough to do this on your own turf, let alone on the slippery floor of a rainforest when you’re trying to record bioluminescence on a micro scale. So, hats off to the photographer for having the vision and the know-how to pull off a tricky shot like this. It's not just a technical achievement either, it's a beautiful shot in its own right.
