I love the colours in this. The blue and gold wonderfully compliment each other. The composition works because the rising steam enhances the otherwise flat sky. The splashing water droplets add to the energy of the shot. I can feel the sun on my face and a chill in the air. This is a very sensual photograph. There is nothing I would seek to improve on. This image certainly makes me want to visit the location and investigate the photographic possibilities.

I'v e never shot a volcano but I imagine that they might be quite difficult subjects. The long exposure picks out the light trails well. If it were me I would have edited out the star trails to try and get a cleaner sky. I would then have darkened the sky and increased the contrast to really make the lava bombs stand out against the background. This may make the overall photo too dark so lightening up the fore ground a touch may also have helped balance the image.

A fantastic shot. I love how the gold in the sky matches the colour of the field and how that complements the purple of the clouds. The scene looks rather alien as if it could have been shot on another world. The duel focal points of the lightening and tree work terrifically well. It is really hard to find fault with an image of such quality. If it were me I might be inclined to remove the light coloured pixel to the far right of the image, and perhaps remove the other trees in the far distance.

I do love this image though I am not sure what I am looking at. Perhaps this is part of the appeal. Initially I saw a lump of metal only later to make out the form of the elephant. Although I can see some water in the image I'm not sure it fits the brief all that well. Presumably it has been added to the competition on the strength of being a great image rather than fitting particularly well with the elemental theme, which is a bit of a shame.

I really like this image though at first I wasn't sure what I was looking at. I suspected that is was a rocks section which proved to be correct when I looked up the image information. When viewing this image in an abstract sense I can see three if not four elements. Equally though I can see a distant galaxy or toxic waste corrosion. I guess that's whats great about abstracts, you can see what you want. I think this image would make a great piece of modern art.

I love this image. For me it is reminiscent of a scene from Star Trek or perhaps the cover of an Asimov novel . I assume that the image has been enhanced in Photoshop and perhaps sky and character added separately. I might be being a bit picky but for me the figure looks a little unrealistic. I'd prefer it if the silhouette was a little less perfect, adding to the realism of the shot. Overall though a magical image.

We’ve all heard of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, the classical elements as described by ancient cultures. We’d like to see your photographs depicting these four elements. Feel free to focus on one single element like an individual flame or water droplet, or perhaps show where elements clash such as water eroding rock, magma erupting from a volcano, or a tornado causing devastation. Maybe the image could show the union of all four elements coming together.

Meet the judge

This shot is so wonderfully dramatic and atmospheric. I presume it was taken in the early morning with fog rolling off the sea. The figure very helpfully gives a sense of scale. The huge foreboding cliffs look almost alien in origin. I love how the fresh morning sunlight both illuminates the sea, and gives the flog a glow of almost ethereal quality. Another location I will have to most definitely visit when I can. In my mind this shot is just perfect.
