A classic Edinburgh view from Calton Hill. This is enhanced by the golden hues of the late evening. I like the way the photographer has not tried to fit in the whole monument on the left and allowed us nearer to the buildings of the city.

A dramatic view of this subject which I really like. The sky is great with just enough clouds to make it interesting. It has been edited well to show the highlights of the scene although personally I may have taken down the saturation just a little.

I have several pics of this fellow doing his street thing but what I like about this is the way the photographer has got the blur of people passing by while the main subject stands so still. I wonder what goes through his mind on his long unmoving days.

Being outside of the main city makes this a slightly different entry to the contest but is an extremely well taken photograph. The positioning that the photographer took up is good in that we get space on the left side of the picture to see the new apartments in the far distance.

This photograph is well composed and the light adjustment excellent. Night photography is not easy. I like the way the slow shitter speed gives us the feeling of the Ferris wheel turning. The scene takes in all that is important from this view.

A well lit night shot which conveys the atmosphere of the view extremely well. The bright light coming from the window on the right helps balance the picture. All in all the picture is full of the atmosphere of Edinburgh by night.

Although not a classic view of Edinburgh this captures the coldness often experienced in the city. I presume the pedestrian is passing by St Giles Cathedral or other Edinburgh church and the pink of the umbrella stands out so well from the texture of the building and the sleet. Love it.

Edinburgh's Folly is a popular thing to photographs but this image makes it extremely dramatic and is enhanced I feel by being in black and white. The angle helps makes the picture stand out and the sky being slightly out of focus helps add to the drama. The photographer was lucky in having the right blend of sky and cloud.

Meet the judge

A very popular view of the city but for me the time of day it was taken puts it into the top ten. I like the way the photographer has placed the monument close to the camera bringing the city closer to us. The exposure of a tricky time of day for taking pics is good and the warm colours of the lights against the blues and greys of the monument and sky help although I kind of wish the castle had been lit in orange too.
