Thanks for submitting this image which I love as a beautiful example of classic family photography. The black and white toning gives a timeless feel. The aperture gives us plenty of meaningful detail (e.g. skin texture) on a focal plane that contains the meaningful elements of the frame; the baby fitting into the parent's hands. Congratulations on third place.
Thank you for submitting this image which I recall but which again grabbed me immediately. You've captured strong emotion, connection and character as well as strong sense of the concept of family. In terms of storytelling, I appreciate the tension in the physical positions (seeming almost as one for a second but the mother holding the daughter in place) and the contrast of the mother's direct eye contact with the daughter's hair covered expression. Visually, the tones emphasise this contrast. Compositionally and in terms of aperture, the background texture adds gentle tension too whilst not distracting from a strong and simple subject placing. The image draws me in and makes me want to know more about the subjects and their relationship. I feel it represents the inherent tension with the closeness of family very well. Congratulations on first place - there wasn't a single image that I loved more than this one.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Family means different things to different people, but underlying all the celebrations, and the arguments, and the love, and laughter and intense annoyances, is a bond that was forged long ago, and which endures in some form or other, no matter what. We’ll keep this contest focussed on families of the human kind, and don’t feel constrained by blood relations - we form families of a kind in many other areas of our life too.
