Why did I select this as the winner from over 260 images I hear you ask?

Perhaps a surprising winning image to many I am sure but for me, I really appreciate that the photographer has not only captured a different take on a fireworks theme but had the confidence to enter it into this competition.

Of course, when shooting fireworks, the intention is to catch the colour but this black and white image is rather powerful for the boy adds some context to the image.

The inclusion of the fire-starter on the far left is a welcome one, despite them being more brightly lit than the main subject. They helps to give the scene some interest.

Congratulations to the photographer.

An excellent image that incorporates a building/structure to very good effect. Everything is sharp, and well exposed and the lighting on the lighthouse particularly pleasing.

I also like the complimentary colours of the blue and red.

A lovely image indeed.

Congratulations to the photographer of the second placed image.

I was drawn to the simple long lens composition of these beautiful looking fireworks. The single colour helps to create a very pleasing image with some wonderful clarity.

To my mind, the shutter speed is perfect too. Overall, it is a really beautiful image that deserves its place on the podium.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Fireworks can make for amazing photography, and are a great way to use shutter speed creatively. Done well, images of fireworks convey the excitement and wonder of the fireworks display, whether it’s a small box that you let off in your own backyard, or a huge public display that takes your breath away.
