Food From Above

April 2022

I love colours. This image caught my eye very quickly as scrolled through countless food images. It would make an excellent marketing image

The tomatoes look a little "flat", due to the lack of specular highlights, and after looking at the image for a while, the tomatoes seem to be at odds with the rest of the image.

Nice composition

This made me laugh. An interesting idea that has been put together rather well. The single overhead light has added to the image with the single specular highlight on each spoon.. The yellow of the egg is quite a stark contract to the rest of the monotone image.

Nice idea, and well executed.

I like the colours, texture and lighting here. Very nicely thought through, from the opposing shapes of the pineapple square and round plate, the rough of the cloth and pineapple compared to the smooth plate and pomegranate seeds. The same again for colours too.

Really nice image

I found this image rather intriguing due to the texture of the vegetables. Normally a smooth and quite colourful vegetable, it's quite interesting to see the rough and subdued cooked version. The lighting is used to good effect to emphasise both.

An unusual, and well conceived image. I like the overall textural feel to the image. Not only the "fish" itself, but the surface too (caviar?) The reflective properties of the spoons are quite a stark contrast to the background., somewhat softened by the powder.

Really nicely done.

I've done a fair bit of splash photography in my time, and all client orientated. I've never seen a splash shot from above that has been as well executed. Mine haven't been as clean as this. Trying to organise a central "impact" with a good expanding splash is very time consuming, and rather hard on the patience.

This is excellent!

The muted tones work very well with the composition, and particularly the choice of spoon. I particularly like the fact the spoons and supporting surface look weathered and well used, adding to the homely feel to the image. The texture of the surface is a nice contrast to the worn smoothness of the wood.

I find the textures quite fascinating within this image. The rough skin of the cooked fish is a contrast the the linear texture of the chopping board, along with the slight charring of the vegetables The generally muted colours work well too, with the stronger blue of the fish standing out quite nicely.

A very simple concept that has been well done. The contrast of the chequered table cloth to the round bowl, milk and cereal holds the eye, and the handle of the spoon leads in quite nicely.

Really nice image, well done

Really nice use of a single light source, providing emphasis on the main subject, and very well controlled so as not to lose detail in the shadows. The splash of flour adds some nice contrast to quite dark image.

Really nicely conceived and executed.

It was both the symmetry and colours that caught my eye here. Really nicely conceived, with a lot of thought going in to the composition and subject I really like the amount of detail that really draws the eye too.

Very nicely done

Overhead food photography is a neat way to show what’s on a plate. It allows for some fun with place settings, side dishes, drinks and the like. It’s extremely popular as a way of documenting food choices and recipes on Instagram, and shooting from above also means that the room in which the food is being shot becomes less important, and so potentially makes for an easier shoot. To be on brief, imagery must be shot from directly above the food, and not from an angle.

The colours here are absolutely fascinating. It has an almost other worldly feel to it, that appears to make the slice of fruit almost glow, and give it a definite three dimensional feel. I have absolutely no idea as to how the image was constructed, but I find it quite mesmerising.

Beautiful!

I found this image to be rather intriguing. The high key exposure was very well managed, allowing the cup and saucer to bleed into the background, without over exposing the coffee beans themselves. The cup and saucer blending into the table top, creates an intriguing abstract shape, that is mirrored by the beans.

An original idea, well executed.

I just love the detail obtained here. A subject that isn't that often examined as we make use of it, or eat it. The earthy grubbiness along the cup edge, and where the stems have been cut, add to the raw country kitchen feel to the image.
