Square crops on architectural photos can really add a different dynamic to the overall image and this image doesn’t fail to impress! What caught my eye about this photo is that it was very different to the other images in the competition, you have really thought outside the box. I can see the reflection effect that has been used to achieve the symmetry in the image. I really like this effect and doing so you have portrayed your own vision of these two awesome buildings. I am a big fan of symmetry within photos and you have captured this perfectly. I also like the overall post processing, it gives the photo a post-apocalyptic feel to it. I am glad that you went with this processing rather than black and white.

There is a lot to love about this photo. Firstly is the symmetrical nature of the staircase itself, always a big plus for me in architecture photos, I am a big fan of uniformity and this photo fits the bill. Secondly, I really like the curved architecture in the middle of the frame. It really compliments the darker part of the staircase with its high key feel but also adds another dimension to the whole photo. Finally, the human element of the lone woman walking down the staircase adds the finishing touch to the whole image. It reminds us that stunning, modern architecture is not just there for admiration but also has practical everyday use. The photographer has demonstrated this beautifully!

First of all I would just like to say Congratulations on your photo achieving first place! There were around 600 images entered into this competition and your photo immediately caught my eye as soon as I saw it! You have skilfully captured this wonderful spiral staircase, something that we often take for granted when we enter a building, how often do people just stop and have a look in detail at the wonderful architecture we have around us. You have captured the proportions of the spiral staircase wonderfully, something that can be difficult to achieve sometimes. I love the fluid, organic nature of this staircase and of course the subtle textures of the material used in the construction, this really helps draw the viewers eye inwards towards the centre of the photo! Well Done!

Congratulations on submitting such an awesome photo! When I was judging the competition I kept coming back to your photo, I just love the way you have composed it. The square crop you have used here with the giant curved structures composed within it works wonderfully. I especially like the way you have placed the building within the lower portion of the frame, this really draws the viewers attention into the photo. The way that you have used colour popping with a hint of red is simply wonderful and you have achieved the right balance, its one of my favourite parts of the photo! I must also compliment you on the way that you have skilfully captured the light, different shapes within the curving structure and that awesome looking wispy cloud in the sky. Great work!

I am a big fan of long exposure images and you have used this technique beautifully to showcase this wonderful building. The wave type nature of the building is very unusual and really pleasing to look at, especially when its background is the moving clouds from the long exposure technique, they really do compliment each other. The image is very well balanced and you have captured the highlights and shadows very well. The only thing that I do find a little distracting is the dotted curved metal part at the bottom of the frame, I think you could crop this out as I believe it distracts away from the main building in the image. Apart from that, a very well thought out and executed image!

This is simply wonderful. I really like the modern, high key feel to this image. It feels really clean and it’s been a real joy to look and judge this photo in this competition. The use of diagonal leading lines into the frame really helps the viewers eye to be drawn into the image and they draw your attention to the lone man walking along what appears to be a walkway. I am not usually a fan of colour popping but I simply adore this, the photographer has skilfully found the right balance of colour popping with just the man's jumper being highlighted in orange, it just adds another fun and interesting dimension to the overall photo.

It was such a joy to look at this photo, what is particularly strong about this photo is the un-uniform pattern of the polka dots on each panel of the building, each is unique and interesting. I really like the abstract way you have captured this building, you have given it a sense of mystery and it really makes the viewer engage with the image in order to work out what they are looking it. I am glad you did it in black and white as this really emphasises the abstract nature of the image. I would certainly be intrigued to see a colour version of it to compare. All in all a great piece of work, one to be proud of!

Wow, what an interesting and brilliant architectural image. What caught my eye on this image is the close crop you have used of this fantastic building, something that isn’t often attempted by architectural photographers as it hard to get the level of detail that you require in the final image. So for this I congratulate you for this for being brave enough to give a close up crop a go. The level of detail you have achieved here is simply wonderful, first off I like the layering, the different layers give you a sense of how deep the building must be. My favourite part of the whole image is the juxtaposition of the curves and straight lines of the building and of course the mixture of golden and blue hues. Well done!

When I originally saw this image during judging I wasn’t too sure what it was at first but it sparked my interested, and it wasn’t until closer inspection I realised what I was looking at. I realised that I was looking up inside a lift shaft, a very colourful one at that! You have made great use of leading lines which draws you into the image and also the natural framing of the lift shaft exaggerates these leading lines. Another aspect of the image that I particularly like is the sense of speed, this gives the image another dimension and makes its particularly mesmerising to look at.

This image is certainly all about modern architecture! It is such a wonderful image to look at and admire. The mix of lines and curves works really well here and the use of black and white really helps bring out all the details. This is something I think that wouldn’t have worked as well if it had been processed differently or in colour. Also the way you have placed the building in the lower third of the frame really works for me, it helps the whole image breathe and giving space to the clouds in the upper two thirds simply compliments this wonderful building!

Meet the expert judge

I believe that this photo really has a lot going for it. I like the post-processing, the cold colour and tones, it really does work for me. I think one way to improve this photo would be to adjust the crop. I find the dark line at the top and light sky line on the far right hand side of the frame a little distracting. I feel it takes my eye away from the fantastic architecture of Canary Wharf you have captured in your photo, I believe if you lose both of these in a slightly different crop it will emphasise the image subject more.

First of all I just want to say what an awesome looking building you have captured, very unusual, it does make you wonder how the architect thought up such a design. What I like about your photo is the simplicity of it, putting the building centralised within the frame looking up at it really works well, it gives you a sense of size and scale. This centralisation within the frame doesn’t work with all buildings but it does with this one, I think it’s the corkscrew action of the building that allows it to work. I think there are a couple of places where you could improve the image, I think you could lose the street light in the left hand corner of the photo, I don’t believe it adds any value to the image and does distract away from the main focal point. Secondly, the post-processing really doesn’t work for me sadly, this is purely subjective of course but I feel it makes the image a little bit cluttered and it also softens the overall image a little. I feel a more traditional black and white post-process would work better here for any future edits.

I am always a big fan of London buildings, especially these. I like the long exposure effect that you have done, it really works well here. For me, there is not too much wrong here, I just feel every time I look at the image I want to straighten it up by making the pointy shaped building more centralised. I think this will give you a stronger composition, as the long exposure clouds in the background will emphasise the detail of the buildings. It will also draw the viewer deeper into the photo. Apart from that, a really enjoyable image!
