Processing HDR interiors is a tricky business. Under-process them and you end up with a flat low contrast image lacking life and visual impact. Over-process them and you end up with a garish artifact laden cartoon of an image.
What constitutes a good HDR is obviously very subjective but in my judging I was looking for interesting interiors, well composed and where the HDR processing was done with subtlety to preserve both highlight and shadow detail and to add sufficient local contrast to give the image real visual impact.
My first placed image meets all of these criteria. The light is well balanced, the composition strong and the image really does catch the eye. I especially like the muted colours and the doorways and windows giving views to rooms and exterior spaces beyond.
Congratulations on a most accomplished image .......
A high impact image and once again very well processed. The light is well balanced and the symmetry and slight fisheye distortion really do suit the subject matter.
I’m really pleased with how different my top three places images are, an old ruined building, a classic period interior and an ultra-modern escalator. This really does demonstrate the flexibility of HDR interior photography.
Congratulations .......
A different type of interior again, but like all other images in my top ten it holds the interest, is well composed and processed with subtlety which highlights but does not overpower the scene.
There’s a real sense of being there looking at this picture such that I almost feel I could walk in and take a seat.
Congratulations on your top ten finish ......
Meet the judge
Very different to my first placed entry but another example of the visual impact which a well processed HDR image can provide.
It’s a fascinating room, the composition has been carefully considered and the extremes of light and shade have been balanced perfectly. I love those windows with their subtle checkerboard colours and views to the distant countryside beyond. They really do open up the image and bring the room interior to life.
Well done .......
The HDR processing is well done but it’s the strong perspective, contrasting patches of wet floor and reflections in the puddles that really caught my attention here.
Who’d have thought that a big empty space like this would make for such an appealing photograph.
Very well done on a deserved top ten placing.

In this contest I want to see your very best HDR images of building interiors. Any type of building is permitted and your entries may be in colour or monochrome but the submitted images must not include any people. HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography is a generic term for a variety of techniques that typically combine the image information from multiple exposures into a single image with the preservation of highlight and shadow detail beyond the limitations of a single exposure. Depending on personal preference the HDR processing can yield images ranging from naturalistic to surreal but when pushed too hard can introduce unsightly and unwanted artifacts such as haloes around hard edges and a tendency for bright whites to become grey. Please no pictures of building exteriors, only interiors of buildings.
