Home Gardens and Allotments

October 2021

A beautifully captured robin with the bird in perfect focus and a pleasing background. Such a bonus to have the snow too! The spade makes the connection to the gardener who often finds herself/himself in the company of this charming bird. It might be worth to try another colour treatment to empasize the cold.

This looks like you have applied some sort of artistic filter. Although I'm not usually a fan of this I love it in this case as it really brings out the painterly qualities of the garden. The path is leading the eye into the scene and the houses make for an interesting addition.

A fresh, bright image featuring a lovely rural garden scene. The fence is cleverly guiding the eye into the scene and to the garden house. It's nice to see more of the landscape. With this being such a pretty scene it's a pity that the yellow machine is visible in the background. This could have been avoided by chosing another shooting position.

A beautiful seaside garden scene with different "layers" adding depth and a path leading the viewer into the scene. The colours are well handled and I like the way the plants have seeded into the pebbles creating a transition. I'd be tempted to crop the bottom a bit as the paving doesn't contribute anything.

A well spotted scene which made me smile. The cats are just in the right spot and look so happy and relaxed. The bright colours of the door and pots work well together and I like the play of light and shade on the wall.

A very appealing, well framed image with a subtle colour palette and a pleasing geometric pattern which creates order. The scene is very peaceful and conveys the pleasure of working the land and the meditative quality of the act of planting.

Hosta leaves are such fascinating objects. Great idea to convert it to monochrome as it emphasizes the shapes and leads the eye straight away to the with flower. Maybe it'd be even a stronger image if you'd crop the right side with the brighter leaves at the top?

It's a good idea to frame a scene with the branches of a tree. It's a beautiful garden and house too. If I had taken the shot I'd have tried to exclude the flagpole. If you open the umbrella it also looks more inviting.

I really like the arrangement of the foliage plants against the worn wall which has a fab patina complementing the Bougainvillea. If it were my image I'd be tempted to crop the bottom a bit to zoom in more on the plants and the wall.

A well spotted little still life which works because of its simplicity, contrast and reduced, calm colours. The scene is well lit and framed. It was very clever to include the reflection of the trees in the window as this fills the picture with life and context.

This image looks almost like a painting and tells a story: that foxes have now become part of the urban scene. The colour treatment is natural and pleasing, the fox well positioned under the apple tree. If it were my image I'd be tempted to crop a bit more at the bottom.

A beautiful image which perfectly illustrates the importance of light and mood. I like the framing and the fact that the phootgrapher has included so much of the sky which is simply awesome. The colours harmonise beautifully, the scene is positively glowing. The yellow shrub is mirroring the yellow window frames. An image to cherish.

There is boundless joy to be had creating and evolving a garden, and growing produce for the kitchen. These spaces are valuable for leisure, escape and wellbeing, and never more so than in recent times when we’ve been spending so much more time at home than usual. Capturing the beauty and variety of domestic garden spaces, and the ways in which they are enjoyed, brings even more joy. As with so many subjects in the natural world, the artistic possibilities within even small areas are many. All images of home gardens and allotments are welcomed.

This is a lovely combo! You have not only spotted the lines –or waves rather!– created by the plants but you've also succeeded in capturing them well. The colours are natural and pleasing. Maybe a small crop top and bottom would make it even pop more as the out of focus leaves bottom right are a tad distracting.

Very nice image which lends itself to a monochrome treatment. Although it has been taken recently it has a historical feel about it. The square crop and low perspective are working very well. The background is pleasing and adds context.

Butterflies are so tricky to photograph as they're always fluttering about. You have done a great job in capturing it as it's sharp and you've obviously paid attention to the background/bokeh which is smooth and appealing. If it were my image I'd be inclined to crop the grasses on the left at bit to make them less dominating.

A very appealing and delicate portrait of a purple conflower. The flowers are in focus, the colours beautiful and the crop works well. You've managed to isolate the flowers sufficiently from the background, there's just the one stem behind which is a little distracting.

A beautifully lit and composed still life that illsutrates that less is more and how important the consideration of light is in achieving an impactful image. The colours work well together, there's a great DOF and all the same a smooth background.
