Tough and uncompromising. Like a detective the photographer gives us all the clues. The direct stare to camera, the man's grubby face having finished playing or watching a football game. maybe an ex player even rugby? though the football posts in the background suggest not. Strong use of flat light add to the drama which is made through the composition and scale of the person in the frame. A strong image that you have to look at.

A classic image that has a timeless feel. A sense that we have seen it before lends itself to a film still from a genre of film noir cinema. Great use of contrast and dramatic light add drama to the picture as our eye wanders around the scene. Like the final scene in Lost in Translation we wonder what is been said between the train guard and woman.

A powerful image that talks about human endeavor in the face of a monumental task. The figures in the foreground work very well in creating a sense of scale in relation to the ship and the impossibility of the job in hand. Strong composition from the figure in the front left takes the eye around the frame. Good use of light, scale and timing. A very strong image.

Similar to a Cindy Sherman 'Film still' we are presented with a strange image which seems familiar. Where is this woman going? What is in the oversized case? So many questions which remain unanswered. We the audience have to fill in the blanks. This photograph demonstrates photography's ability to ask questions whilst never giving away the true story. Intriguing.

A formal image in two halves. We see the board workers having a quiet moment together. Unaware of the conversation they are having we are forced to make our own version up. On the left hand side we see an a small till and signs which suggest a cinema stall. Really good use of light and colour add to the drama of this well seen image.

***For this contest we're asking you to take inspiration from the work of August Sander. Please take a look at Sander's photography before entering your own work.*** August Sander was a photographer who was once called "the most important German portrait photographer of the early 20th century". His work focused on portrait and documentary photography of people at work, as exemplified in his iconic series 'People of the 20th Century'. We'd like you to take inspiration from this era-defining artist for this contest, and send us your own interpretation of his style.

Sometimes you have to look at a picture for a while before it gives up its secrets. At first glance this is a photograph of servicemen from a different era. A tribute to soldiers from the past. On closer inspection we see different uniforms from different periods. Are these re enactors or attending service. Does it matter that we don't know. A strong formal group portrait.
