Kitchen Macro

July 2024

Between the warm colour palette, the water drops and the juicy subject, this capture exudes summer. The shallow depth of field is pleasant and adds much character to the image. Even though the blurry foreground area is quite extensive, there area in (pin-sharp) focus is large enough to immediately draw the eye's attention. The light is interesting - a little harsh, but at an angle that allows it to enhance and cast a highlight on every single water drop on the tomato. I love how different this image looks from the typical tomato macro shot. A successful macro capture indeed!

This image shows masterful use of light. The light source, located on the subject's right, allows the dipper's grooves to remain in shadow, gifting the image with interesting depth. The low-key, soft lighting, confers a very intimate mood to the shot, which is also enhanced by the dark background and the choice of warm/earthy tones. The light angle enhances the wooden texture of the dipper whilst creating subtle highlights on the honey dripping down its tip. It's pleasing to stare at the contradicting textures: the glossy, runny honey against the rough, hard wood underneath. They are both so close and so perfectly sharp that I can feel their texture under my fingertips. A fantastic macro image, well done!

Beautiful pastel colour palette in this melon macro shot, taking the viewer's eye on a journey through small details rarely noticed before. There appears to be a light source located behind the fruit that makes the thinner parts around the seed area appear brighter, adding depth and interest to the image. This shot's sharpness is incredible. There is so much definition in the furry texture of the seed area that I can feel it on my fingertips, and I'm so close to the melon that I can smell its scent. What a treat to have a sensory experience through an image. This is a fantastic macro shot. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** One of the joys of macro photography is that practically anything becomes interesting when you get close enough - showing up details, textures and form that can’t be fully appreciated from further away. So why not confine ourselves to a particular room of the house, and see what can be found? The kitchen offers a great variety of objects to play with and explore.
