Landscapes of the Mind

I fell in love with this composition the moment it first popped up on my screen. It's totally bonkers and that really appeals to me. It makes me smile and it conjures up memories of 'The Magic Roundabout' [Le Manège enchanté] ... but it has its own originality and surrealistic comic style. It's simply fun ... Enjoy the whimsy! How well described ... My #3 and very well deserved. Well done and thank you.

It has been a genuine pleasure and a privilege to judge this contest. The standard of the entries was beyond my expectations and that also made it tough going because it forced me to make brutal decisions about some very impressive images that did not make my final cut.

My brief asked for real or imagined landscapes with originality and the only way that I could even begin to make choices between images was by trying to adopt a common aesthetic so I could curate and present all of my final choices as what, I hope, will make sense as a coherent visual whole. I hope the decision to ‘curate’ rather than judge the works submitted makes sense because many of the images I have commended could easily have been included in my Top Ten ... but decisions have to be made and this is my Winner. For me, this powerful explosion of colour, this dynamic graphic jigsaw of a landscape is both original and striking, fits the brief perfectly and it is my #1 in the face of significant competition ... This impressive composition takes my Second Place. I think the image speaks for itself. It has a striking graphic impact that would not be out of place on an album cover or a poster for a Sci-fi movie. I love the depth and the consistent tonal changes and the hard lines of the urban vista against the backdrop of the planet and starry sky. It all works me. Inventive, imaginative and surreal. Sometimes simplicity works and I was really taken by this deceptively simple composition because it requires a narrative that we need to supply in order to engage in a visual dialogue with the image itself. It also asks questions: Why are the boots laced together? Who owned the boots stranded on the beach? What happened to the owner of the boots? Why does this image make me think of Gulliver's Travels? Questions, questions ... This is how contemporary art works and, for me, this photograph would not be out of place in a gallery. Great original work ... Thank you.
