Landscapes with Buildings

Congratulations on your winning image. From the muted colours of the sky, rocks and sea to the punchy colours of the lighthouse, your image caught my attention straight away. You can feel the motion in the waves and also the swooping of the birds giving the shot that extra bit of detail to help break up the sky. The building within the landscape works so well in this image, its big but not too big within the frame, thus balancing the whole shot out so well.

As soon as I saw this image I knew it would make my top 10, photography is amazing when you look at an image and it takes you to the place you are looking at you get that from this, I can feel that warm light at the end of the ravine causing the haze. The building nestled on the edge of the cliff is really amazing to see and I like how you have managed to get a clear shot of it without the trees overlapping it.. But the nicest detail has to be the balance on the exposure to have got the image to have worked as I can only imagine that the water was a bit of a nightmare to try and get rid of the reflection.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** A little sub-niche of the landscape genre for us here, as we look at how buildings within landscapes can add some flavour and points of interest to our images. For the landscape photography purist a building may be a reason to reach for the clone tool, but to others it tells how we interact with, enjoy or use the land. All buildings are welcome, from fairytale castle to cowshed, and indeed the buildings might even make up a majority of the shot if you’re submitting an urban landscape.

Meet the expert judge

Rolling hills with snow-capped mountains with a good measure of mist are what have made the image work for me. Then you have this beautiful sidelight from the morning's sun just creating these gorgeous shadows and highlights that look stunning, this just looks like such a stunning location and one I would love to visit one day, I love it when looking at images makes me want to travel to a location.
