Leaves

May 2022

Heavenly, atmospheric autumn image with a well chosen view point, good depth of field, strong but yet subtle colours and a great framing. The fern in the foreground adds depth and a welcome delicacy. It's not always obvious to find a pleasing, orderly scene in a forest but you've succeeded perfectly.

I just love this image, the trees are positively glowing in front of the dark background, magical light. The square crop is perfect. This is autumn at its best. The trees are so well behaved, not always easy to isolate a subject and find order in a woodland. Pleasing, natural colour management. Lovely pic for a postcard.

An image I'd love to have taken myself! Moody, perfectly lit and framed. The eye is being drawn outside to the autumnal scene. Not many leaves in the scene but there's such a strong sense of autumn and decay. The fading walls, the leaves on the windowsill – a lot of thought has gone into this image. Bravo.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Whilst we include trees, shrubs and other plants in our landscape images, we seem to be less inclined to get up and personal with the beautiful leaves that clothe them, for at least half the year. It is indeed one of the joys of photography that it can encourage an appreciation of our world on different scales. For this contest we’d like to focus in a little more detail on the structure and colour and variety and interplay of leaves. That said, images of trees and shrubs in their entirety are of course welcomed, but let’s make the leaves the stars, whether they be on the tree, off the tree, green, brown, flat or needle-shaped.
