Striking from the first glance, this image captivated me through its dramatic upward perspective. Light filters softly from the sky, illuminating the leaves and highlighting the puzzle-like shape of the tree canopies. The strong vertical lines guide the eye upward and immerse the viewer in an impressive sense of height and scale. I appreciate how the biggest tree trunk converges into a corner of the image, with its canopy perfectly placed two thirds up the frame. This keeps the image tidy and organised despite how busy the frame is. The generous depth of field manages to keep most elements in focus, whilst striking sharpness highlights the precious textures of bark and leaves. This photograph brings leaves and forest structure together in a way that feels atmospheric, balanced, and inviting, and it's therefore a pleasure to look at.
With its single leaf hanging quietly among fine, delicate stems, this image has elegance and poetry-like features that are naturally eye-catching. Soft, diffused light falls gently across the scene, helping the warm red of the leaf stand out against the cooler, muted background. The colours feel calm and well balanced, setting a reflective mood. Even though the frame is quite busy, the composition remains easy to read, with thin lines subtly leading the eye to the leaf. The leaf itself is nicely sharp, showing off its texture, while a wide aperture creates a shallow depth of field that softens the background without disconnecting it from its surroundings. This thoughtful balance of light, focus, and colour turns a simple moment into a delicate and poetic portrait of a leaf.
This photograph immediately draws the viewer in with its lush and vibrant energy. The rich green tones are beautifully layered, creating a pleasant sense of depth. This is further enhanced by the soft light, which highlights droplets and glossiness with soft, yet efficient contrast. Even though the frame is busy, the eye glides smoothly across it, guided to the full leaf in the centre and all its details by its long stem. The sharpness is excellent, revealing fine veins and small water droplets that add texture and realism. This image, well thought-out and carefully executed, celebrates the beauty of leaves with an elegant, refreshing finish.

Whilst we include trees, shrubs and other plants in our landscape images, we seem to be less inclined to get up and personal with the beautiful leaves that clothe them, for at least half the year. It is indeed one of the joys of photography that it can encourage an appreciation of our world on different scales. For this contest we’d like to focus in a little more detail on the structure and colour and variety and interplay of leaves. That said, images of trees and shrubs in their entirety are of course welcomed, but let’s make the leaves the stars, whether they be on the tree, off the tree, green, brown, flat or needle-shaped.
