Great contest!

Thank you for sharing this beautiful picture of an old claw hammer. This photo immediately caught my eye. I love the dramatic lighting which works with the dark background to highlight the imperfections in the worn wood and metal. The unique angle of the hammer makes it easy to identify the 3 parts of this simple machine: FORCE which is applied to the handle, LOAD which is usually a nail, and FULCRUM (pivot point) which is on the opposite end of the load. Whether the load is placed on the hammer head or the claw end, this third-class lever fits the brief perfectly. You really hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

This is a beautiful image that immediately caught my attention. The first thing I noticed was the contrast between the rich red color of the fabric and the dull grey of the scissors. Red suggests warmth while grey evokes coolness. The cold grey metal looks hard and heavy against the warm, soft, thin fabric. The contrast in textures is highlighted beautifully in this perfectly focused macro shot. The image is further enhanced by your choice to use pinking sheers instead of straight-edged scissors. for the subject. The zig-zag edge adds interest and makes for a "cutting edge" photograph.

I love this action shot.!How many photographers would have thought to use a person for the subject of a lever? Not only have you captured the person and the pole, but the elbow joint (shown near the bar) s a lever all on its own. In this example, the elbow joint acts as the fulcrum with the bicep muscle applying an upward force, creating a unique third-class lever. Congratulations, I think you have a real winner here.

This contest is for your photos of levers, which are any rigid bar that pivot around a fixed point and are used to do work with minimal effort. Images can show any kind of lever that amplifies an input force to provide a greater output force, or leverage. Some examples are crowbars, scissors, staplers and nail clippers. Images can be in colour or black and white.

Thank you for entering this sharp image of a pair of locking hand sheers. The pop of bright orange colour draws attention to this point, which is the most essential part of a first-class lever. Using the fulcrum for the the focal point, suggests you have an understand of levers and simple machines. I like that you chose to photograph the shears with the blades open, which further hints at its function. The functionality of the shears fits the brief perfectly. I also like the crispness of this image which allows you to read the wording and numbers on the metal plate. However, for me, it would have been more pleasing if the image were flipped so the words were right side up. Still, a very nice example of form versus function photo.
