Lightning

January 2025

This almost looks like a scene of war. Artillery fire lighting up the night sky. I imagine the noise is not too dissimilar, either. Very bold contrasts from the thick clouds of the foreground against those burning clouds as a canvas.

I like the fact that this frame reminds me of how minuscule we are as a species. For all our engineering prowess and perceived control over the world around us we can be humbled in a split second by nature. Lush colours in this shot.

A stunning image of a supercell here. The sheer sense of scale makes it very apparent that there is a whole other world above our heads. Glorious light from the lightning strike as it moves from the centre to the horizon. Good job.

The lightning has acted as the grandest of off camera flashes here, making still the moving waves in this long exposure. Lots of drama and excitement. Well executed and shows good camera control. Those soft brushstroke style clouds are beautiful.

IN the competitions I always look for the photograph that I think should be on the wall. This is that one for me. Technically great spacing and framing. the lighting reaching from left to right s it strikes is just right. I even like the grain.

One of my favourite forms of lightning is the sort that creeps across the sky in that way that looks for a moment as if it isn't going to stop. That comes through here very well. Patience and good anticipation has been exercised here.

I'd have liked to have seen more metadata here but can guess at the exposure speed. Such wonderful colour from the defused light of the lightning as it moves in and around the clouds. A lovely skyscape full of ominous tones.

Such a lush combination of stars, clouds, lightning and horizon going on in this frame. The colour is enhanced a little much but still feels natural for the shutter speed. Quite surprised the stars are still sharp at 30 seconds, lovely photograph.

A great frame of natural light meeting artificial light in nothing but darkness. I very much enjoy the movement going on and the micro-moment of the lightning bolt. A nicely composed frame with just the right amount of headspace to let the drama do the talking.

I like a frame that gives a sense of surroundings and really helps us feel like we are in the moment, A true impression of what it's like to be on-deck here out on the ocean. Nice low horizon allowing the lightning to fill the skyscape.

A lot of tropical warmth comes through in this photograph. You can almost feel the thick and heavy wind on your face as you watch out over the sea. The salmony pinks add a lot of depth the canvas, which contrasts really well against the moody dark shades.

Such interesting contrasts and shading coming from this mountain in the sky. I like the contrast of the calm sea against the violence of the sky above it. Similarly against the peaceful blue sly in the background. Very pretty indeed.

Another fine example of the nature on a grand scale here. That split second of light revealing tonnes of water on the move in the atmosphere, static spilling over in that brilliant discharge through the giant clouds. A great photo.

A very striking image, if you pardon the pun. The drama being so tightly sandwiched between those two horizons makes the frame very interesting. Almost like a portal to Mordor. I'm a bit confused by the shutter time here. Perhaps a layered image?

One of nature’s great spectacles, tricky to shoot well, but rewarding with truly memorable images. When the weather delivers, and the skies are cracking open, the well prepared photographer sets their tripod, frames the shot, and employs long shutter speeds to capture the scene that unfolds.
