This image is clean, simple, and relatable. The muted colour tones contrast well with the light spectacular, and the back of the audience viewpoint gives real life and energy to the scene. It’s indistinguishable yet unanimously shouts ‘live music’. I even love the simplicity of the captions; #music #nightlife #concert
The leap! Never an easy moment to capture, but here it’s been captured brilliantly. I love the main subject filling the frame, and despite the evident action the image is sharp and composed perfectly. There’s a slight separation of colour tone from the subject to the background – I wonder if warming the image up a little might reduce that effect.
There is simplicity with this image that just clicks, for me. The bold and contrasting colours provide a vibrant tone to the image. The composition off-centre works really well to frame the artist against the red background whilst giving just a hint of the band, and the bolt of lightning just gives it that extra touch of magic.

This image has dark tones, and an indistinct viewpoint to give a widely interpretable view of the live music on display. Emphasis lies on the audience and their engagement with the artist, whose gestures are enticing them in their hoards. The audience are captivated, and that in turn captures the eye of the onlooker; the photographs audience.
This is a fantastic shot with a fairly wide view of the stage and a lot going on yet the moment has been captured brilliantly, and there are no unwanted distractions, which isn’t easy. The lights have fallen brilliantly to illuminate the subject and put a catch-light in the eyes; it’s sharp, captivating and enticing.

This is undoubtedly a great shot, but for me the emphasis falls on the backing singer rather than the main act – a legend. The ‘look’ has been captured perfectly, however, that perhaps this image paints a bigger picture. Colours and composition are wonderful, but I wonder if he had been captured at a slightly better moment could Prince have stolen the show.
I’ve enjoyed second-guessing the story behind this image. It’s a beautiful moment that to me states ‘just be kind’. The appreciation of one person’s music by another is humbling. In a world where everyone often seems too busy, it’s nice to just stop and appreciate, and live music has been captured well here in another genre of street photography.
This appears a timeless street photograph. The strong and contrasting black and white tonal range works well to silhouette the two figures – a solo busking musician and the passer by. The light at the end of the tunnel and the leading lines diminishing into the distance draw the viewers’ eye into the photograph.
This is wonderfully captured portrait of a musician. The composition is very strong, and compliments the warm tonal finish to the photograph. It also adds character and passion to the sitter, as well as to his instrument that he’s clearly at one with. All of these elements fill the frame beautifully.

Capturing the raw energy and emotion of live music can be a joy, and many photographers are drawn to it. As well as the musicians themselves, the live music scene is rich with characters, crowds and venues. Photographing live music comes with its challenges - not least, balancing the lubrication of one’s creative faculties, with still being able to operate your camera.
