Looking Good in Specs

February 2023

A beautifully executed portrait, clean and classy. I like the subject's expression - he seems caught pre-smile, and as I look at him I almost expect his face to break into an actual grin. The lighting is great - soft but not plain, so that the right amount of shadow and depth are maintained, and no glare is seen on the lenses. The subject's eyes are centre stage in this shot, and there is beauty in them, and many stories to tell too, no doubt. A very successful portrait indeed. Well done!

A very captivating portrait that immediately caught my attention. Everything in this shot is interesting: from the subject, to the choice of glasses, to the pose. Together, they create the perfect fun-serious portrait that simply makes you want to know the story of the person behind the lenses. Technically perfectly executed, this is a very successful portrait that most certainly deserves first place. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Gone are the days when wearing glasses was uncool. Just check out how many people wear glasses with no prescription for a bit of fun and a change of look! If you’ve spent time taking portraits of people in glasses then you’ll know that reflections off the glasses can be an interesting and sometimes infuriating issue to solve. We’re not advising you to pop the lenses out of your subject’s expensive glasses, but it has been known as a solution. This is a portraiture contest where your main subject should be wearing some specs, and should be the main focus of the image, not just some incidental character in a larger scene please.

Not one, but two subjects wearing glasses in this beautifully executed shot - and two interesting subjects indeed! The man's pose, looking back, adds interest and dynamism to the image that would have otherwise been lost if both subjects had been simply staring ahead. The light falls softly on the subjects' faces, highlighting enough whilst maintaining shadow and depth where needed. What a fantastic -double!- portrait. Well done!
