Looking Up

December 2023

you can really feel the energy of the wind in this shot. I think black and white was a great choice as it allows the viewer to really appreciate all the beautiful textures and shapes of not only the fabrics but also the way the light plays across them. A really interesting vantage point, abstracting the subject and keeping the viewer engaged. Well done, lovely work.

There's something very wistful and painterly about this photo. I feel like I'm looking right up to the heavens. The viewer really getting this sense of being and/or looking right up in the air. Having the bird really elevates the image, it adds this focus and puntuates the softness of the clouds. I love the way the light comes throught the wings too. Fantastic work, well done.

Shooting through the grate makes such an interesting effect. Creating a shape that really intreagues the viewer in its abiguity. It fits the theme so perfectly too. I think to make it even stronger you could crop it a little. It's still an amazing image as it is though. Well done.

This image is really strong with the contrasing colours between yellow and red of the building and shoes, and the blue sky. the legs are excitingly surreal. I think you should have leaned into that graphic nature of it and considered editing out the flag. It's still a really lovely image as is though. Well done, nice work.

Such an other worldy image created from something so simply. I enjoy it a lot. I can't tell if it's the editing or the shade itself but the light and all the beautiful gredations are beautiful and almost look like. a graphic and not a photo. Removing all other context really enhances all these things too. Great work, well done.

I think the timing in this shot is phenominal and interesting in that the bird isn't in a traditional position in the air. And there's something very satisfying about the shape that's created. The light is so beautiful they way it picks up all the feathers. I think it could have been cropped more confidently. Either into a square, accentuating the symmetry. Or with more negative space placing the bird more in one quartile. It's still a lovely image regardless. lovely work well done.

I felt like this picture really encapsulatesd the theme for me. All the dangling roots of the plants and the wide agle lens gives the viewier this sense of vertigo. The many layers of the buildings above adding so much dephth to the image. Something about the fulless of the composition adds to all of this too. I love it.

There's something beautifully timless about this shot. With the combination of washed out tones and the simple stark architecture. The slight yellow of the building and the blue of the sky really compliment each other too. All the stepped parrallel lines play with your vision a little and really draw you in. Grea work, well done.

This image is extrodanary. I love the way it messes with your senses of scale and direction. Your mind almost telling you it's a window and you're looking out horizontally. Then seeing the person and it's like. a mental flip of the senses. The really graphic nature is very satisfying. Then there's more to explore in the details in the texture of the structure. An amazing image well done.

There were many pictures of the Blaakse Bos houses in this competition and this one really stood above the rest for me. The colour grading is lovely and really compliments the image. And the plane really is the icing on the cake of symetry. it adds the exciting element of timing too. Nice work, well done.

The effect the multiple strands of yarn create on the person behind is incredible. Such an interesting phenomena. I also think it's a really interesting interpretation of the theme. What a great vantage point. The colours really make the whole image sing too. Congratulations and well done.

The least natural of the angles to point your camera, or your eyes, and so the one that might just have the biggest potential to surprise and delight. Views that we’re not used to seeing that often can be found when we get underneath things and arch our necks. Architecture above the ground floor; views up into plants and trees; a portrait from below; a flagpole or building crane reaching into the sky. Any subject is welcomed, but do make sure that the angle of shooting is decidedly upwards.

The simplicity of this image is really beautiful. There's something about the arrangement of the birds and their positions that make this feel like. a timelapse, i love it. It adds a real energy to the shot. Great work, well done.

What's really interesting is how the mudane becomes when abstracted. It takes you a moment to see what's there when shown something everyday but seen from a very unusual point of view. I like how it keeps you guessing for a moment. I think choosing to use black and white helps this effect too. Well done, lovely work.

One of the amazing things about photography is it's ability to capture that single moment in time. And you have fantastically demonstrated that here. What a moment to capture. I think it's hard to show the energy and ecitement of paracuting in an image but you've really done it here. Great work, well done. That's quite the lens you've got there too!
