The square format, layers and dynamic diagonals work well here, but as the top half of the sandwich and the bottom half of the crisps don’t fall on the same focal plane as the central layer, the focus falls away. It might have helped to position the camera completely parallel to the subject or, failing that, focus stack.
The lighting and background bokeh help to transform an everyday subject into something special here. The depth-of-field is well judged (the foreground blur created by an aperture of f3.2 gives an impression of abundance) and the texture of the coffee beans and wooden scoop have been showcased well.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Still life and macro photography are natural buddies, and there’s so much fun to be had when you’re exploring a still life subject with your macro lens, filters or extension tubes. There are surprising textures, shapes and compositions everywhere you look, and often rendering the subject difficult to identify, such is the ability to change how something appears when it is shot close-up.
