Macro Still Life

November 2021

I like this image for the calmness I get when I look at it, it resembles a painting to me. The colour palette and tones work very well together. I would never have guessed that the background was busy, you've done very well with the texture mask.

This is a very well executed macro shot and it's good that it was shot with minimal post production needed. The shallow depth of field focusses my eye onto the water drop very nicely. The tones of the image are really pleasing.

Blue and yellow! Complimentary colours really work well in this image as well as it being a beautiful subject. The strings of water droplets look great on this spider's web and I'm just waiting for that big drop to fall off. It's very nicely composed and exposed.

It was so hard to choose one winning image as there were so many great photographs. I decided I had to pick an image which stopped me in my tracks, was beautifully lit, had nice composition and would make me happy to look at it if it was on my wall. This picture ticked all those boxes for me, it has a feeling of a beautiful painting.

The reason this liquid image stood out from others to me is the soft colour palette that's been used. They are very pleasing on the eye. The composition of the oil drops on the water is very nice and the shallow depth of field blurs the background well.

Wow, I love the detail in this close up shot of coloured pencils. The depth of field is great to hold my eye from the tip to the bottom. The colours are all working well together and the lighting has been well done.

A beautiful image and technically very difficult to expose for the flame and the lighting on the match itself. The colours work really well to produce a bold and 'striking' image! I really like the detail and texture of the matchstick and the match head.

I like the idea behind this fun shot. I also appreciate the time and thought that was put in to produce it. It is also well executed and it's both a still life and a macro shot. The depth of field and possible focus stacking is very good.

Great detail and lighting in this image. I like the way the front of the cherries are lit but the lighting falls off to black but the bubbles are still lit well. It all works to produce a very strong image.

This is a lovely executed macro shot. Good lighting and exposure, also very nice detail of the droplets too. It has had me looking at it and wondering what technique was used to separate the larger droplets from the smaller ones.

This image summed up what this competition was all about for me. It's a nice still life and a macro shot. It has a lovely gentle, calming feel about it. I would possibly have liked to see a bit of light fall off around the edges to concentrate my eye to the sharp areas of the image but it's a very nice image.

Adding bokeh to this image has certainly helped the image to stand out without it being too overwhelming. The colour has worked really well to create a beautiful, dreamy image. The sharp detail on the tulip's petals help to focus my eye on the subject.

Here are two genres - macro and still life - that seem tailor made for each other. Both require a degree of attention to detail and allow for more contemplation of the subject matter - its placement, lighting, and composition. Still life is imagery of inanimate objects (both natural and manmade) and these offer the opportunity for the macro photographer to be deliberate and calculated in their approach.

This dreamy picture reminds me of a painting and it's down to the clever post production and texture work which has achieved this beautiful result. The colour palette works really well. Impressive work given that it sounds like it was a pretty dodgy flower to start with.
