It was so hard to choose one winning image as there were so many great photographs. I decided I had to pick an image which stopped me in my tracks, was beautifully lit, had nice composition and would make me happy to look at it if it was on my wall. This picture ticked all those boxes for me, it has a feeling of a beautiful painting.
This image summed up what this competition was all about for me. It's a nice still life and a macro shot. It has a lovely gentle, calming feel about it. I would possibly have liked to see a bit of light fall off around the edges to concentrate my eye to the sharp areas of the image but it's a very nice image.

Here are two genres - macro and still life - that seem tailor made for each other. Both require a degree of attention to detail and allow for more contemplation of the subject matter - its placement, lighting, and composition. Still life is imagery of inanimate objects (both natural and manmade) and these offer the opportunity for the macro photographer to be deliberate and calculated in their approach.
