This one stood out for it's strong compostion. I'm obsessed with where the frame ends and I can see you've really thoguht about what to include, where to precisely frame and where your viewpoint should be. Architectura; photos need light and shade and a sense of the 3d, all of which you've acheived. There's lots going on here with texture, scale, points of interest and detail. You've nailed it.
Light is everything in photography, expecially architecture. It adds texture and dimension to the subject and aids composition. This shot is a great example of all of that. The eye is led from left to right, from dark to light, it's got a sense of place, of context, which in turns gives the building scale and stature. Freeing the skyline of obstructions and distractions is also helping the impact. I'm enjoying studying the sculpture on the top and the ramshackle-ness of the old building, which would be less clear if the sun hadn't been shining, giving it detail and 3 dimensions. Nicely framed and nicely seen
As a judge I can't help be drawn to the images I'd be proud of. Proving that judging is purely subjective ! Anyway, this caught my attention because of the tight and clever compostion. along with the nice light. It's well exposed - get the highlights right and still retain detail in the shadows. The image fits the brief well (there were a lot of images of buildings made of stone), bricks are dominant but not overly so. The split composition sets the scene, grounds the building, gives it context and scale and last but not least, shot at just the right time of day. Well done,
I really like this - the viewpoint and the person in it. Is it Liverpool Cathedral ? I'm sorry you got a 'no' - it's purely because there are no bricks in shot, it's all cut natural stone. It's not just you, many people entered images of buildings made out of stone. Try entering it into a competition where it fits the brief and I'm sure you'll get somewhere.
Super shot, full of atmos, great exposure and viewpoint but there are no bricks. The castle and the path is made of natural stone so I'm sorry to give it a 'no', I hope you can appreciate that it would be a dis-service to entrants who've shot and entered images of structures made of (man made) bricks..Please don't be disheartened and enter it into a more fitting contest, I'm sure it'll do well.
Nice shot but like so any others I'm hunting for bricks in shot and can't find any. Bricks are manmade building materials, unlike natural stone that's cut intp blocks. This is a nice shot though, really nice moody lighting, youve nailed the exposure and the viewpoint gives a real sense of place and atmosphere. Enter it into a town centre or architecture comp
This is a really cracking image ! It's got everything - great viewpoint and perfect framing with drama filled striking composition - the eye sweeps up from bottom left into the centre and beyond. The strong shadow helps accentuate the straight lines, the angles and the depth of the building. Plus the image contains detail and texture (so important for architectural imagery). The person is perfectly placed, adding scale and interest. Without the person the shot would be good but not stand-out great. And the sun's flare in the window - the chef's kiss ! Really nice striking image, well done
Meet the expert judge
Moody ! We like moody. And also an original image when viewed alongside the other entries. and 'original' catches a judges/photographer's eye. Quite a tricky exposure I imagine but you've got it right ; detail in the highlights with the right amount of detail in the shadows too. The bicycles make it, without them it would be an interesting shot but with them there's more of a narrative, a story, a moment in time. This is, along with the technical execution, why it's in my Top 3. Nicely observed and executed, well done.

Super duper ! Why ? Because the composition is great, it was quite brave to include more snowy trees than viaduct but it works really well, I admire your self restraint in that regard. And looking down the road with the tyre tracks leading the eye in and off into the distance., This image caught my eye. There's isolated colour with the viaduct with a really strong composition that tells a story. Well done.

Really nice shot full of atmosphere but sorry, the subject is natural stone, not brick. It would be unfair on those who entered shots containing bricks if shots of natural stone are awarded. Please don't be disheartened becuase this is a nice shot and you should enter it into a more relevant competition
Very nice shot but sorry there are no bricks, the structure is made of blocks of natural stone.. Having said that the viewpoint is great with a great sense of scale and place. There's detail in the scenery and the structure, It's not fair on other entries that contain bricks if off topic subjects slip through. Please enter it into another relevant competition

The humble brick, used in construction for almost 10,000 years and counting, apparently, and still the go-to, stalwart material of much of the world’s building industry, despite its many modern-day challengers. You might take a photowalk around your local brick-built housing estate. You might visit the majestic Tate Modern museum in London, the repurposed and renovated brick-built Victorian power station. If you want to send the Photocrowd offices into a state of confusion then upload a picture of a brick, and we can get to thinking about whether it is made of bricks or not.
This is super. Full of movement and atmosphere. The streetlight really makes it, the warm glow. The person, is he a postie ? also, without him or her the shot would have less impact and interest. I don't know if you shot it from a car or you braved the snow storm, it doesn't matter but the intense snow - there's enough of it to say 'snowstorm', giving enough gaps to show the scene. It's one of those 'non places', you're not on the Great Wall of China or at some magnificent building, you're in a Gateshead street and this is what photography is about, finding beauty in anything and everything. Bravo and thanks for entering it, it made me smile, caught my eye and inspired me. (even before I read it was Gateshead, which I know very very well). This is in the top 15, I wish judges could award a Top 20 instead of a Top 10
This is a lovely shot but I can't see any bricks ! It's got atmosphere, a sense of place and the Northern Lights - all add up to an interesting and impactful image but when you're judging 3000+ images, when an image is 'off brief' it gets a 'no'. I'm sorry to pick on you, there are other off-brief images. While stone is laid like bricks, I can see why it seems like bricks, but it's not bricks ! Enter this into a night sky or home or isolation comp and you'll do better at the judging stage
This is lovely. I love the calm-ness of it, created by the clever composition, viewpoint and framing. I don't know how long you waited for someone to be in the right place, or if you know them and instructed them or if it just happened without any input. The 'how' doesn't matter, as a pro when I look at shots like this I wonder. I also wanted to tell you that you were in the Top 15 with this shot, I'm sorry we have to award a Top 10, so your 'highly commended' s actually a very very highly commended
Is this the Hovis ad location ?! It's a nice shot with a sense of calm and serenity, very fitting for the location. I think you''ve done some hdr in processing, but it's not overdone and for that I salute you. I don't know if their your children, they make the image more interesting. Plus the strong sunshine on the hills in the background - beautiful. There are no distractions, litter or a person or any of the other things that can distract. I don't know if this light unfolded for you or whether you waited, it doesn't matter, lovely shot ! It was in the top 15, I wanted to let you know as sadly we judges can only select a top 10
Love this ! It's very 'on brief' and has an extra something. The person riding away on the bike turns it from a nice shot into a story. Where are they going, is that a child on the back, where have they been ? And they help the composition, your eye starts in the left and moves to the bike and off into the distance. The slight fogginess also adds to the atmos, and the night time shoot. It's easy to turn up to a glamorous castle and snap but this illustrates that the mundane can be so much more interesting. The shot made the top 12, so sorry you only just missed out, competition for the top 10 was fierce
This is a really nice image. I'm an architectural photographer who likes straight lines, abstract, interesting views, texture and scale so was really drawn to this image. I'd be proud of it and I'm sure a client, whether architect or construction co or engineer or materials supplier would find it a great shot for marketing. Nicely seen, thanks for entering it and you're in the top 15, sorry not top 10
