Made of Concrete

May 2022

I'm not entirely sure whats going in this photograph, it looks like a camera obscura projection..? But nonetheless its a fantastic and intriguing image. The city skyline projected on the side is reminiscent of an installation. I like the layers within the photograph too - the differing levels and perspectives. A wonderfully confusing photo!

This looks like a photograph of the staircase at the National Theatre on the Southbank in London. Its a great example of an abstracted composition that reduces the elements within the frame to a mimimum. I love the decaying concrete and fading yellow colour - the optimism of the freshly painted yellow is long gone.

This is the winning image for two reasons, firstly because it is a very original response to the competion brief. Secondly because of the evocative and spooky atmosphere that it creates. Its like a film still more than a photograph - it has a very strong narrative. I love the slightly voyeuristic feel too, fantastic!

I love the pure abstraction of this photograph and the celebration of colour and texture. It looks like a CAD rendering, in a good way! The reduction of the compositional elements to the minimum is very successful. Its decontextualised abstraction makes this a strong, confident image.

This photograph stood out to me due to its different approach to answering the competition brief. I love the abstraction and reduction of details in the photograph, yet we can imaging what a wider photograph could reveal. The clouds of concrete dust are very evocative and the slight red tones in the background make this a minimal but elegant image.

The long exposure used within this photograph means it transcends usual depictions of infrastructure and becomes something much more impressionistic and abstract. The photograph reminds me of Thomas Demand's work, where the artist constructs everyday scenes out of cardboard. This photograph has that same uncanny feeling, wonderful!

Here is another example of a photograph that looks more like a film still than a photographic image. The composition and atmosphere reminds me of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. The addition of the figure in the corner of the frame adds to the scale and epic feeling of the image, fantastic!

When I first saw this photograph I thought it was an infrared image due to the blackness of the sky. Its a fantastically precise and composed image, reminiscent of the New Topographics photographers of the 1970s. There is a surreal feeling to it too, which I always enjoy.

This fantastic compostion reminds me of the work of Michael Woolf, who photographed hyper urban densities in Hong Kong (among other things) I like the way the architecture fills the entirety of the frame, making a suffocating feeling for the viewer. I'd love to see this image printed to a huge scale so I could examine the contents of all the windows in detail. Fantastic!

This is another example of a photograph that looks unreal, like a Thomas Demand construction. The red curb stone leads the viewer throught the frame towards the diagonals of the pavemnent and pillar perspective. A minimal but extremely accomplisted composition.

This is s fantastic photograph that shows that images don't need to be in focus or still. I'm assuming the photographer zoomed in the lens during the exposure, to make this effect, or walked... Its a perfect methodology to employ in photographing the Holocaust Memorial as it is so evocative of the experience of walking through the columns. A very sophisticated image.

I'm assuming this image has been substantially edited in post production/ Normally i'm not so keen on images that have been heavily edited, but I love this photograph. The 'white out' feeling of the image, the way it fades around the edges and the intensity of the red within the frame makes it a very successful - is slightly sci fi image.

This is a fantastic example of answering the competition brief with a documentary image. Its an unusual photograph to see in this competition but it really stood out. The compostion of the people within the frame works very well, they create a good spatial balance. Also the crispness of the B&W tones and lighting within the image make this a very compelling photograph.

Concrete is the second most used substance in the world behind water, and the most widely used construction material. Its usage worldwide, ton for ton, is twice that of steel, wood, plastics, and aluminium combined. Recently though concrete has been in the news more for its environmental impact, and given its importance there will be some bright minds figuring out how to fix that problem. Concrete isn’t just used in buildings - what images have you taken of concrete in action around the world?

I love the power and intensity of the waves in this photograph. The technical precision employed by the photographer is impressive, even the seaguls are in the right place within the frame. I also like the decision to make the image black and white - it adds to the sublime power of the photograph. Wonderful.

I love the abstraction of this photograph. I'm a big fan of concrete and love the staining and degredation that occurs over time (ii'm chosing to ignore the environmental impact of concrete!) The reduction of the photograph just to a staircase is great, minimal elements concentrate the viewer to study the tones and staining, almost beautiful in the weathering and age. A strangely beautiful image.
