Made of Metal

December 2021

Another photograph made with a camera phone, but nonetheless a very strong photograph. I love the inclusion of the man for scale below the enormity of the ship. The choice to desaturate the photo works really well, accentuating the beautiful wintery feel of the photo.

I love the speed and urgency this photo suggests; the blur and abstraction successfully adds to this feeling. The twilight and intense reds and blues within the photo increase its evocative capacity. It reminds me of Idris Kahn's work superimposing all of the Bechers iconic GasTowers photographs together into one image.

This is a great example of how abstract photography can be used to transport the viewer. I love the photographers use of strong lighting and a macro lens to take a simple childs toy and create a magical image. The use of light refraction and shallow depth of field are also important within this great image.

This is a stunning photograph of a jet engine. I love the crispness and the 'oiliness' of the black and white tone. The full composition of the photo, with no 'escape' around the edges adds to its success. It reminds me of Charles Sheelers Modernist photography of American Industrial plants.

There were a few 'documentary' responses to this competiton brief but this one really stood out. The location is extraordinary and its narrative makes me want to know more about the people in the image. The choice to shoot in B&W is good, eliminating extraneous details to concentrate on the structure and shadows.

This is a wonderfully evocative photograph of West Pier. A lot of photographs of this pier were submitted into the competition but this is easily the best. The phtoographers use of an ND filter has allowed the use of a long exposure which adds to the slightly spooky feeling. A beautiful photograph.

This is the winning image as it really stood out for its originality in the interpretation of the competition brief. (Although I was slightly dissapointed that it was shot on an iPhone, I teach photography, so i can't escape a preference for cameras!) The image is well composed and the close cropping is intriguing, who exactly does the hand belong to...? Wonderful

I'm not always a fan of collaged images but this has changed my opinion. This is a fantastic image. I didn't even realise that it was collaged until closer inspection. The tonality of the image works really well and the superimposition of the iron girders of the bridge is evocative of a misty day. A wonderful image.

Here is another exciting response to the competition brief. I enjoy the humour and minimal nature of the photograph, but really what excites me about the photograph is its construction/composition. Through the use of a simple safety pin and strong lighting, the photograph has made a very sophisticated and narrative photograph, well done!

This is a more unusual interpretation of the competition brief but still successful. I'm always happy when photographers choose to 'construct' the image; manipulate everyday objects and recontextualise them into a different type of photograph. The minimal nature of the photograph is strong and the use of a mirror to reflect something out of shot is interesting and prompts the viewer to ask questions. A great and intrigueing image.

Everything from product shots to documentary images are acceptable in this contest. You could choose to focus on a wedding ring or an elegant modern bridge in a cityscape. The subject lends itself to varied and creative interpretations of the theme. Rusty objects are also allowed!

I always enjoy photographs that are 'constructed' rather than found in real life. This is a very successful and exciting entry to the competion. The inventive use of staples and other metal objects to construct a city landscape is fantastic!

This is perfectly composed photograph successfully answers the competition brief. Its a very strong photograph, the combination of geometric abstraction and grey toned colour palette works really well together. I also like the fact that the shot is taken from below, giving the image an unusual perspective.

I love the humour in this photograph, its what made me notice it amongst the other entries. I also really enjoy and appreciate the 'construction' of the photograph. Rather than 'finding' an image out in the world, the photographer has chosen to 'make' the photo in a studio setting. Its a refreshing and original response to the competition brief.

I love the trashy aesthetic of this photograph, which is meant as a compliment! I was slightly dissapointed that its slightly out of focus, but nonetheless its a very arresting image. It reminds me of Wolfgang Tillmans' work; abstract details celebrating the mundane and banal.
