The use of shadow and light in this picture is brilliant. The gradation in darkness almost gives the illusion of movement in the building. It's hard to capture a building that everyone knows very well in a novel way. Here this has been done very successfully.

A great picture full of light and freshness despite the fact that the buildings are made almost entirely out of rather monotone concrete. The symmetry of the composition gives a nice calming feel added to by the water. Who wouldn't want to just step into this scene?

This picture is a feast of subdued colours. The stained glass windows are brought out very well and stand in good contrast to the rather grey building and sky. The patina of the roofline adds to the interest. The small bit of graffiti half-hidden by the bushes takes away some of the severeness of the whole scene. Very nice.

Despite the fact this building is unfortunately derelict, this picture has great attraction. The combination of different colours and textures in the building contrast very nicely with the more monotone steps. The subdued light creates an almost mysterious feel. Very nice.

Many photos were submitted of the National Theatre but this one stood out for me. It really shows the building alive, full of people enjoying themselves. The whole scene has been captured very well with lots of contrasting levels, as well as different colours, of light.

A simple composition but one that reveals nice little details when you look more closely such as the different curtains and the texture of the concrete. The Chinese lantern brings a nice distraction in what would otherwise perhaps been a rather dull photo. Great shot.

See more contest details

In this contest, I would like to see you capture architecture from the middle of the 20th century, roughly from 1945 to 1975. Architecture from this period is often known as the Mid-century Modern design movement, or "mid-mod". You can show the exterior or interior of buildings and other man-made structures from anywhere in the world from this period. I will be looking for photos showing striking examples of "mid-mod" architecture from the mid-20th century and particularly images that make creative use of shadow and light. Composition will be another key element taken into account during the judging. Please include the location and details of the age of the building in your picture if you can. Pictures that omit these details and are not obviously mid-20th century architecture have a reduced chance of being selected for an award in my judging.
