A simple scene of the relics of this iconic mine in the Peak District, set off by the beautiful light of what looks to be the last light of late evening sun which has just disappeared below the horizon. This viewpoint gives a great sense of the place, as we get an idea of the rural location, and a view of the range of structures in this little cluster of mining remains, nicely set against the sky behind. Everything looks natural as the eye would see it, with no heavy editing effects. Congratulations on your winning image.

The structures of this modern mine make for a striking composition. Being captured on a grey and cloudy day seems to suit the subject, which I am sure very few would describe as being beautiful. The smoke billowing from the chimney adds a sense of movement, and also helps balance the composition by providing interest in the upper part of the shot. I love the cool colours, with harmonising greens and greys dominating. Well done on your top ten placing.

This image really gives a sense of how the landscape must have been dominated by tin mining in parts of Cornwall in times past, as in just a small area here we see the chimneys dotted across the hillside. I like the field of view, as we are close enough in to see the details of the mining structures, but far enough out to see the context. I like that you have included a little area of the sea too, further detailing the coastal location. Congratulations on your third place finish.

On initial viewing, this image could show a beautiful landscape view, far from the realms of industry. Closer inspection however reveals the scars and waste from the workings of the slate industry, telling stories of industrial times past. These changes do not always spoil the landscape, but just become one of the many events that shape the land. I love the depth this image has, with the golden tree and pile of slate close to the front of the scene, with the eye then being taken through the shot to the distant peaks. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

A lovely capture of a fascinating location, strongly documenting the industrial past of this scenic part of the world. The image looks to have been very carefully composed to ensure the structures in the near and far distance are well separated so the numerous individual structures are identifiable. The inclusion of the sea helps add further context to those unfamiliar with setting of the Cornish tin mines. Congratulations on your second place finish.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of the exteriors of mines and quarries. These can be still in current operation or long abandoned relics. Examples include sites for quarrying building materials such as marble or slate, or mine workings for such as coal, lead or tin. Please only show the exterior views, with no photos inside mine shafts or tunnels etc. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.
