Minimalist Landscapes

April 2022

A cracking shot of a lone boat captured by a drone. Wonderful textures in the water and a great colour palette to match really helps to lift this image off the screen while the brighter light on the left hand side of the image balances out the darker section on the right.

There were so many snow images among the 5,700+ images entered that in the end, I had three to choose from and I decided to have this one rank on my top ten because of its unusual composition of the fence line. It just works so well.

I love the slight shading of an 'S' shape from bottom left to top right to balance out the fence line. Overall, it is a wonderful image.

A very subtle capture of a lone tree set among a flat, consistent base. A desaturated sky helps to elevate the tree with minimal clouds in the sky helping to highlight the tree further. This is a really lovely image indeed.

A simple shot of a wooden hut by the water but it has been captured so well. Great tones and a desaturated look really do help to convey a sense of isolation and an almost abandoned feel and look to the scene.

The Outer Hebrides captured beautifully and in keeping with the beaches of Harris. Harris is a place that I often visit and to capture it in a way that truly reflects the place is quite a difficult task.

Great colour palette, and a dreamy quality to the image. A beautiful capture indeed.

The only animal based image to feature in the top ten but what a capture this is. It is beautifully presented, with great colours and a perfect composition and the placement of the penguin is just fantastic. This is a great shot indeed.

This image caught my eye from the 5,700+ images that were entered and it takes an image of this quality to stop you in you tracks.

The colour scheme is the most dominant element of this image but the shape of the wake and the placement of the boat wins it for me. A lovely image that deserves third place.

A seemingly simple capture of the wooden hut during a long exposure works so well. The sky plays an important role in providing some texture, colour and interest without dominating.

The colour of the ground in the foreground really does compliment the rest of the image. I love it.

Love this capture of a farmer at work. A very strong composition of defined lines along with the atmospheric bellowing of the crops into the air.

I also love the tones and the colour palette too. A really deserving second place.

Stunning capture of St Thomas Church in Slovenia. I have photographed this myself many times and to have conditions such as these is such a treat.

Great light, wonderful colours, a truly stunning (and consistent) mist inversion at sunrise as well as a gorgeous church that is way off into the distance has placed this image as my favourite.

Well done indeed to the photographer.

We’re stripping away excess clutter from our landscapes, and reminding ourselves that pared back imagery with a minimal number of elements can be just as impactful and successful as when the frame is packed with detail. Your minimalist landscapes can include water, but must also contain some land. And human habitation and buildings can be present, but the shot should predominantly be non-urban.

What a refreshing way to present this lovely little church as it is often photographed head on with the mountains behind at sunset. I love the free space around the church itself and the colours are just wonderful. A lovely image indeed.

Great strong lines that dominate the image. I love the deep contrast displayed here. There is a similar shot from the same photographer entered in this composition but the brighter sections of the image have detail in them. I prefer this version. A lovely shot indeed.

The church on the island at sunrise on Lake Bled in Slovenia is a scene that I have shot a dozen times and more.

To capture light as lovely as this is fairly rare from my experience yet the photographer has done incredibly well to do so. Lovely light, a little bit of mist included and a great reflection too.

A lovely long exposure shot of the pier with a great neutral sky to highlight the wooden structure perfectly. A sense of symmetry leads the viewer's eye through the scene beautifully while there is ample separation between the first two wooden supports.

Love this shot of the two walkers in the snow. Great diagonal lines really convey the mountain scene in the snow.

Great tones and contrast add to the scale of the scene while the difficulty for the hikers to navigate the mountain is evident.

A lovely scene of sand dunes that ebb and flow wonderfully well. There are some lovely tones and colours with a desaturated sky that really compliments the scene well. This really is a lovely capture and is one of my favourites of the 5,700+ entered. .
