The processing means this is not the moon as we normally see it, and it won't be to everyone's taste, but in terms of highlighting the many impact craters on the moon's surface, this one stood out. I also appreciated, if that's the right word, the photographer's added background info and will now be avoiding Peterborough at all costs.
My favourite of the submissions featuring the moon as part of a scene dominated by more earthly elements. Why? It's primarily the choice of framing structure (a kind of mid-20th century brutalist Stonehenge). Not only does it bring to mind medieval lunar worship, it works superbly as a geometric composition, especially in monochrome.
It's a photo of the moon, which is what this competition was about. It has attractive and interesting surface detail, is well exposed and isn't over-processed, and has subtle colour tones that make it stand apart from many other worthy entries. I also like the fact that it isn't a whole moon shot, which places it in the context of other bodies in the solar system. Fabulous image. Congrats on your win.
I've done all the judging without looking at the crowd vote, so as not to be swayed by other opinions, and I'll be interested to see how this fares against the others.
