If someone were wondering how to convey coldness in an image, looking at this shot would give a fine example of how the extreme chill can be portrayed. The lighting is subdued but this adds to the shot, as the even lighting brings harmony across the entire scene. Cold bluey-greys dominate the image, with just some small pops of golden brown on the stones in the foreground. Composition is great, with plenty of foreground interest, and the eye is then lead into the frame long the line of the river. The tree is also nicey positioned in the frame and gives good balance. Congratulations on your second place finish.
What initially attracted me to this image is the lovely contrast between warm and cold, which has been well captured in this beautiful rural image. The warmer colours of the golden light and autumn vegetation emphasie the chill of the frost on the ground and bracken. Exposure has been well handled, as there is plenty of detail in the shadier parts, and the lighter areas are not over bright. The subject is simple, but the gate acts as an invite to explore the land beyond. Congratulations on your third place finish.
I love this type of image, where the subject fills the frame. Some may find such images al little dull, with no obvious focal point to draw the eye, but that is what I find so attractive, as the frame is bursting with details and there is something of interest for the eye to explore wherever it falls. The conversion to black and white works well with the subject, and emphasises the forms, shapes and patterns of the ice with the lighter and darker tones. Well done on your top ten placing.
I love this shot. It is just the sort of scene so many would pass by without realising the potential for an unusually different, rather abstract, winter landscape. The image works well in black and white, which allows the spidery crack in the ice to be the main focus, and also emphasises the cold chilly feel of the day. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
A beautifully creative abstract, simple but highly effective. Composition and framing is great, with the main line running on a diagonal across the frame, giving equal weight to the sparkly ice and the smoothed flowing water. The slower shutter speed has captured the movement of the water a a gentle misty swoosh, giving a lovely contrast between the smooth and the rough of the ice. Super detail image, well done on your top ten placing.
A simple, elegant scene, but as is so often the case, the simplest is often the best. The little cluster of three trees would no doubt be photogenic at any time of year and in any weather, but the chilly frost and snow certainly makes for an especially attractive scene. The image has been nicely exposed, which is not always easy in these lighting conditions when photographing predominantly white tones, which can easity become dull or take on unnatural hues. That has not happened here however, instead just some lovely pastel tones emphasising the chill of the day. Beautiful image, well done on your top ten placing.
A dramatic close up image of the surface of the ice, presumably a glacier. Good control of the light has enabled the form of the ice to be detailed, with the contrasting lighter and darker tones emphasising the crevasses and textures in the surface. The colours are lovely, rich but cool, which obviously suits the subject. Lots of interesting features in the composition for the eye to explore. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

There were a number of entries of frosty vegetation in this contest, but this one stood out for me. Control of the shadows and highlights is good, and I especially like how the highlights of frost pick out the outline of the leaves to reveal their shapes against the dark backdrop. The brighter tones on the fluffy/spiky bits of the plant bring the image to life and act as focal points. Beautiful image, well done on your top ten placing.
A beautiful image of a simple subject; frost covered grass. What makes tbis image special is the low to the ground viewpoint, and the close-up position, which both combine to give the subject a more unusual perspective and makes it different to many other frosty grass images entered, which gave a much wider and higher viewpoint. The shallow depth of field has been produced by a combination of the relatively wide aperture and long focal length, giving just a slice of sharp focus with the rest of the scene both in front and behind being out of focus. The little sparkles of light on the frosty grass bring the shot to life. Well done on your top ten placing.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of naturally frozen water in the form of ice and frost. Images can show frost and ice in any setting from a wide landscape view of a glacier or frozen waterfall to close up details of patterns within a frozen puddle or frost covered surfaces. Please ensure the frost and ice is an obvious feature of your image, and that images show frost or ice, not just snow. Please only enter photos of water frozen naturally, not man-made ice cubes or ice sculptures etc. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to your entries.
