Chris’ image is certainly worthy of mention as what it does demonstrate is his keen eye for detail and creative use of the available light. Chris has chosen to frame his subject against a light source at a very shallow depth of field which has created a very distinctive “bokeh” effect. What we are left with is a striking and powerful composition that immediately attracts the eye and invites the viewer to take a closer look.
Unfortunately Chris’ image was taken at a very high ISO which produces a “grainy” type effect throughout the frame and the silhouette of the spider is just slightly out of focus. Reducing the shutter speed and some experimentation in “post” may have helped; but photography is a learning journey and in no way should this detract from what is otherwise a very unique and striking composition.
I’ve no doubt it took Katy a lot of time and thought to capture her impactive image of a Kangaroo Rat as it scurried along the desert floor.
One of the biggest challenges in wildlife photography is understanding your subject and learning to anticipate animal behaviours. By studying her subject Katy has strategically positioned her camera and flash along the ‘rat run’ which she has then fired via a remote release.
Whilst Katy’s image may have benefitted from a slightly wider crop, her choice of lens and depth of field all combine to make an unusual but nonetheless compelling insight into the otherwise hidden world of this nocturnal creature.

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** Nighttime photography can connect you to a part of nature that’s otherwise rarely seen. Nocturnal creatures such as spiders, moths and other little animals animate when it gets dark, going about their business in a world that’s far removed than the one we’re usually exposed to. Make sure you’re using the right lighting settings or equipment to capture the best of nature at night.
