This photo has it all: hard work, danger, patience, and is beautiful on top of everything! I really appreciate how much work went into getting this photo and how you explained your technique. I love that you told me the story behind the photo; the story is so important to give context and it intrigued me, as I've never been so close to a volcano before! Thank you being in my contest and entering one of the most exciting photos I've seen. Congrats on 1st!
Meet the judge
Wow!! I can almost hear the crack after roaring thunder. The yellow of the city lights against the heavy, dark blue sky and crystal clear white strikes of lightning make this photo one that definitely falls into the category "Nature's Fury." Thank you so much for providing the technical aspect of it as well! I read every story provided for every photo to get context and understanding. Great job!
Oh dear, this photo really pulls at my heartstrings! The parent penguin protecting their young from the onslaught of the storm is what makes this photo a piece of art for me. The blizzard raging around them doesn't prevent you from seeing them; in fact, being enveloped by this storm makes the viewer want to reach into the photo and save them both! I love seeing them lean into the high wind, parent offering shelter to their baby, the confident look of the little guy in his mama to keep him safe. While most of my entered photos focused on storms, this one was able to do both: give me an emotional reaction AND show me just how unforgiving mother nature can be. Wow. All of these things just hits me right in the chest. Love it. Beautiful and artistic, I would hang this in my office any day. Congrats!
This photo made me say OMG when I zoomed in a little and saw that those were small buildings that were about to be hammered by the snowstorm. I love how the squall stands out from the blue clouds behind it. It looks so isolated and frightening that I found myself worrying for the people that were down there! Scary and amazing! The only suggestion I can give would be to crop the photo just a teeny tiny bit so those buildings stand out against the fury coming their way and give context to just how BIG that storm is. Incredible photo! I would love to hear the story behind this one. Thank you for entering my contest and congrats!
What a wonderful photo! So many details it really keeps my attention. Everything from the trees taking over the dilapidated truck to the wintry sky and dead leaves gives the viewer this intimate view of how nature is always just under the surface, waiting, and that long after we're gone mother nature will still be righting the wrongs of man. This truly is a defintion of Mother Nature's fury: powerful, dominant, methodical, demanding, constant...One of my favorite quotes from Jurassic Park is "Nature always finds a way to assert itself" which sums up this photo perfectly. Great take on the brief!

The first word for this photo that came to mind was "desolate." The most amazing part of this photo was that even though there was a raging blizzard swirling in, the middle of the photo is so clear I can see the snow piling up on the window sill. The cottage is aloof and offers no relief from the storm. And that is just what makes this photo feel so desolate. Just looking at it makes me feel a little lonely, like I'm the only person left in the world. It feels...poetic, artistic, and a little sad. And it's because of this that I can't stop looking at it. Beautiful job.
When I first saw this photo I shivered; the combination of clouds, sheets of rain, and the raging waves made me feel like I was there. The clarity is so wonderful and tactile that I felt like I could reach into the photo and feel the rain on my hand. The light on the waves keeps it from being too dark; the photo is so crisp I can see every raindrop hitting the water. Beautiful, thought provoking photo. Congrats!
