Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Animals’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Landscapes’.

The colour palette on this image is warm and aesthetically pleasing whilst not being over processed or oversaturated. The focus looks spot on for all four subjects and the shallow depth of field ensures they're not lost to the background.

You've chosen well to centralise this subject due to the symmetry and the rocks work well to frame him, whilst still in some ways camouflaging him too. The focus, exposure and depth of field are good and the colour palette is warm and aesthetically pleasing.

I really like what you've done here and it works really well in black and white. The light angle and shadow adds a gorgeous additional element and the composition is unique and works well. I'd consider cropping in slightly from the bottom to remove the second cat.

You've focused really well here and the shallow depth of field ensures that the background doesn't distract from your main subject. I'd consider cropping in slightly from the left to get the sheep to look into the frame more and increase the exposure slightly to make this image really pop!

I love the floppy ears on this sheep and you've captured a fabulously charismatic portrait! The colour palette is natural and aesthetically pleasing and despite it looking like it's a bright day you've handled the exposure well with no lost highlights or shadows.

Small lizards are fabulous subjects to photograph but aren't without their downsides. Due to their small size and the distance you have to shoot from, you're often shooting with shallow depths of field so it can be hard to ensure the subject is properly in focus. Try increasing your depth of field with a higher f/stop to reduce the risk.

Pigeons are such characters but people often overlook or go so far as despising these intelligent birds. You've captured a great image here with the bench framing the image and the colour on his feet and eyes really popping from the surroundings.

What a beautiful bird and you've captured it in such a fabulous pose too. The colours and light are aesthetically pleasing despite being a bright day and you've not lost any detail in the shadows or highlights. When possible, try to shoot low over the water with waterfowl to get the 'best' angle possible.

I love the surprised expression on this Ground squirrels face and you've done a great job with the composition: the subject looks into the frame, the low angle ensures the foreground and background are not distracting and you've not dropped anything off accidentally.

What a stunning dog! I love the low angle which helps to draw you into the image with soft bokeh in the foreground and background. The composition is good with the subject looking into the frame and the focus looks crisp and sharp.

It can be challenging to freeze the action with fast moving subjects but you've nailed it here! I like the dark background with the hummingbird contrasting well against it and I love how his tongue is also peeping out, adding an additional element.

I love how content this seal looks and the abstract nature of the image is gorgeous. I'd consider cropping out the bottom seaweed so that you can only see seals and increase the exposure slightly to make the image pop even more.
