Pigeons have often been ignored, overlooked or even hated but you have to admire how well they've adapted to an urban way of living and I feel like you've captured that narrative expertly here! I love the natural framing from the bridge and the colour palette, especially with that red eye popping so well from the surroundings.

This image works really well with the contrast between the gators and the decking, not so much in colour but detail and texture. I'd consider cropping ever so slightly from the right to remove the chair or post peeping in from the top right hand side.

I like the atmosphere in this image and how you've photographed through the foreground foliage to add some depth and perspective. I'd crop in from the left, perhaps to the mid torso of the moose to make the crop look more intentional.

I love how well the foliage and berries on this image frames this cheeky squirrel and you've captured it in a quintessential pose. I would recommend increasing the vibrance ever so slightly to make the colours and squirrel pop a bit more.

Squirrels of any kind can be a great subject for wildlife or animal photographers due to how well their personality shines through on images and the vast variety of behaviours you can capture. I'd recommend cropping in more to remove the bright leaf popping in on the mid right edge.

The separation between the bird and the background is fabulous here and I like how you've captured the reflection in the eyes and the detail in the shadows. The depth of field is good and you've really nailed the focus and exposure.

The direct eye contact, paired with the sheer size of the eyes too really draws you into the image and keeps you focused. The perch acts as a leading line to draw you in and whilst the colour palette is quite neutral it works well.

Gory as it may be, images like this can be important to add variety to any portfolio whilst highlighting the harsher side of nature. I love how the carcass is framed by the lions and the warm colour palette is quintessential Africa.

What a perfectly timed capture! I love how you show the whale in context of the surroundings which was helped further with the wider depth of field you chose. The shutter speed is perfect to freeze any movement in the droplets and subject.

It can be difficult to compose images when you have multiple subjects as they will often be awkward to balance but you really nailed this one! The colour palette is gorgeous, vibrant and natural and some personality is shining through from the subjects.

The branches surrounding this lion work really well as a natural frame which draws you in and keeps you engaged on those beautiful amber eyes. The focus and depth of field are spot on along with a natural and aesthetically pleasing colour palette.

I think it was a good choice to convert this image into black and white as it really enhances the contrast and detail. Should you attempt a similar image to this in the future I'd recommend increasing the depth of field slightly as the focus can differ on a subject and the reflection.

The crop on this image works well despite the horse looking out of the frame which breaks some compositional 'rules'. The focus is crisp allowing us to admire every minute detail and the background adds no distraction with that shallow depth of field.

The vibrant array of colours works really well here to engage the viewer and keep them exploring the image. The focus is good and the shallow depth of field ensures that the slightly cluttered background doesn't become a distraction to draw us away.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Animals’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Landscapes’.

It's easy to lose the details in shadows but you've captured them so well here, showing fabulous iridescence with those greens and blues. I'd recommend cropping slightly from the left to get the bird to look into the frame a bit more.
