New Joiners - Animals #697

November 2023

What a tender moment you've captured here! The shallow depth of field ensures we are drawn into that content expression on the baby whilst still having great context of the surrounding area., The foreground branches act like a natural frame to draw you in further.

I love how you've used the architecture and building to frame this image so well: it really draws you in and also adds a nicely consistent colour palette. The composition is good and the exposure and depth of field are spot on.

The consistent, warm colour palette is fabulous here and really enhances the overall image. The pose and eye contact is really aesthetically pleasing and I love that you've centralised the composition. If you were ever looking to do something different with this image, it would work really well in black and white too!

I love unique and unexpected compositions such as this: We know exactly what it is and yet it's not something we're necessarily used to seeing. The elevated foot of the bottom swan enhances the image further and I love the subtle texture from the weeds.

The composition is great with the subject looking into the frame and the shape on the body acting as a leading line to draw us into the image. I would consider cropping in ever so slightly from the left but this is a personal preference.

I love the cheeky expression you've captured on this fruit bat and how well he pops from the image given the contrast of colour. It works well with the subject centralised and even more so with the square aspect ratio.

I love the action you've captured in this image and the composition is spot on. You used a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action and whilst we can't see the adults eyes, I think this enhances the image!

Zoos can be difficult for photography when it comes to trying to capture clean and natural images but you've done a great job here. I would have loved to see their full reflections too but without being there, I can't tell if this would have introduced distractions.

You've captured great shape in both of the gulls and each of their wing positions compliments the others really well. It can be difficult to properly expose subjects like this against a contrasted background but you've avoided blowing any highlights well!

I love how the door and wall frames this gorgeous cat: it gives us wonderful context of the surrounding areas and adds to the narrative of the overall image. The colours are vibrant and warm without being over processed or pushed.

What a capture! It's incredibly difficult to perfectly time a shot like this and the fact that you still have the eye and most of the face alongside that incredibly aesthetically pleasing splash is impressive! The colour palette is wonderfully warm and aesthetically pleasing.

What a fabulously unique image! Capturing the head pin sharp against that wonderful movement in the body is almost hypnotising and not the kind of image you'd usually expect. The colour palette is fantastic and the depth of field ensures that the contrast and textures in the floor don't distract away from the main subject.

The light reflecting off the shell adds to the detail in this image and I love how well the red pops against an otherwise green background. I'd consider cropping in slightly from the top right corner so we can appreciate the fine details even more!

I love the expression you've captured here and the complimentary colours in the image are really aesthetically pleasing, The centralised composition is spot on with great symmetry in the face and direct eye contact down the barrel of the lens.

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Landscapes’.

The shallow depth of field helps to draw us into the image so well here, with those crisp flakes on the fur and wonderful detail in the whiskers and eyes. If you were ever looking to do something different, a square crop could work really well here too.
