Meet the expert judge
I like the angle you've taken here, positioning yourself and the camera behind the waterfall so we get a different perspective on the scene. The flowing water intersecting the heart of the scene adds narrative and movement, and the colour in the morning sky adds interest, as do the icicles clinging from the edge of the cave, mirroring the flowing water. The portrait orientation works well, concentrating our attention on the most important elements in the frame. Nicely seen and captured.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Landscapes’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.
Your observation, that this image is split down the middle with one half in shadow and one half in light, is the first thing that I noticed about the frame. It works well as a narrative device for the photograph, especially as most of the people are drawn towards the sunshine. Your positioning, so that the light and the shadow occupy around half of the frame each helps to enhance the mood and narrative. This is helped further by your post processing choices that gives a cinematic feel to the image.
I like what you tried to do with this image, capturing that low sun illuminating the wintery landscape. You've attempted to control that sun by hiding it behind some of the distant landscape so it doesn't completely overwhelm the scene and blow out the highlights. There are some instances of lens flare but otherwise this works well. I would consider cropping out the branch at the top of the frame as it's rather distracting and pulls the eye out the image.
This is one of the those images that reveals more the harder you look. At first there is the water weaving though the gaps in the landscape, small tufts of cloud clinging to some of the peaks. Then, on closer inspection, the boat is revealed, traversing the inlet. Keep looking and a temple-like structure is apparent at the bend in the road. The whole image is rather flat in tone and has a uniform blue colour cast. Plenty to see and enjoy.
I rather enjoy this monochrome image that has a timeless feel because of the processing which gives it a filmic edge. The shallow depth of field focuses on the mid-ground and blurs out the logs in the foreground and the mountains behind. This enhances the cinematic feel, like it could be a still from an art house movie. I'd consider cropping out the wooden log that moves diagonally through the frame on the left as it is very distracting and pulls the eye out of the image. That aside, this is an image that has atmosphere.
A powerful sunset, well captured. I like the composition, from the rocks in the bottom left to the three groynes sticking out the sea in the bottom right. This leads to the low setting sun on the horizon, lighting up the sky above and covering the whole image in a warm orange glow. The horizon is slightly off, and could be easily rectified in post to make the image even more impactful.
Patagonia is one of those places on my bucket lists to visit and images like this one demonstrate why. The shape and majesty of the mountains inspire the imagination. The reflection that you've caught here is really rather lovely, with the surface of the water almost perfectly still. The image has a cool colour cast, and a feeling that the atmosphere is clean and clear. The classic composition works well and I bet this was a lovely sight in real life.
This is a clean and clear winter image that uses elements in the frame to powerful effect. The snow covered trees in the foreground are catching some strong directional lighting, leading the eye to the mountains beyond, little scarves of cloud catching on the tops of the peaks. Above, there is a clear blue sky, helping to enhance the feel of the image. All of this is packed neatly into the frame. One of those photos where you can feel the cold just by looking at it.
Really nice sunset image that uses the water and reflection to powerful effect. The cloud is consuming most of the sky, but there are enough breaks in it for the colour of the sunset to punch through and add some interest not just to the sky, but also to the reflection. Interesting that you've given more space to the sky than the water, whereas many people's instinct might be to pop the horizon in the middle. The colour of the sunset creates an interesting shape and overall this works well.
This image demonstrates an understanding of how to use elements in the frame to create a compelling composition. The curve of the walkway acts as a leading line drawing the eye into the heart of the scene and the architecture found within. There is a nice contrast between the blues of the urban centre and the warmer tones in the evening sky. The high cloud base acts as a giant reflector, softening out the light and allowing swathes of orange to escape. A well seen and executed urban landscape.
Who knew that the chimneys of an oil refinery would make an interesting subject for an urban landscape? I always enjoy seeing new perspectives and new subject material and this fits the bill of both. Those chimneys could be architecture of a distance city, rising up to meet the setting sun. Although most of the foreground is in silhouette, there is enough form to give context and the shadows contrast with the warn tones in the sky above. An image that demonstrates a willingness to think outside the ordinary, thank you for sharing.
When I first glanced at this I thought it was a photo of the Lake District in the UK. I guess it was all that low cloud! Nice to see an image of Maui that isn't the traditional images of Hawaii, full of sunshine and blue skies. The low cloud adds plenty of atmosphere, shrouding the peaks of the mountains and creating an intriguing composition. The processing enhances the mood of the shot and this is one of those images that demonstrates the grandeur of nature.

This image is all about the sky. I like the panoramic crop you've chosen to give as much room to the sky as possible, and room for the clouds to move from right to left. The bridge makes for a decent leading line into the landscape beyond, mirrored by the stormy clouds above, reaching into the sky like big fluffy peaks. The tops of the trees in the bottom left help balance out the clouds in the top right. All in all an interesting image.
