This shot definitely gives off fine art photography vibes with everything from the composition, colours and subject matter. There is an interesting story within the scene that leaves the viewer wanting to know more about what is happening. Small aspects make a big difference here, like the pops of yellow flanking the line of workers, the path that bounces off the frame to lead the eye back to centre. I also like the industrial nature of the subject mixed with the towering dunes in the distance. A minor suggestion would be to crop out some of the excess sky, maybe to fit a 5:4 ratio crop, whereas a square crop would probably be too much. You have a great eye for the artistic. Well done!

Waterfalls are a great place to practice and experiment with camera settings, especially shutter speed. This is a great location as it results in a captivating circular pattern in the pool. A pattern that is only revealed with a long exposure. The colours and exposure are great here and you've done well to keep the details in the waterfall without over exposing. The only distraction is the out of focus rocks in the close foreground. A smaller (higher number) aperture and a closer focal point would help keep everything in focus. Also, because you mention you are practicing with filters, a polarising filter is a great piece of kit to bring out more colour in the leaves and rocks, removing some of the white glare. This is still a wonderful shot and you've done a great job!

A well composed and exposed photo. The photographer has done well to control the balance between bright highlights and the darker shadows in the low light. The gentle ripples in the water add a subtle movement to the static scene. Shooting the building at an angle has provided the opportunity to include foreground and background elements that add depth to the shot.

A beautiful sunny day photo with a scattering of abstract clouds in the deep blue sky. The autumn leaves add a pop of warm colour tones to the scene. All this is mirrored wonderfully in the calm lake water. A good composition and exposure and lovey shot all round.

A powerful waterfall image with a sense of place and scale. The use of a faster shutter speed here compliments the harsh environment. A longer shutter would have softened the details and given a more calming feel. Here you can almost hear the roar of the water. The person in the bright jacket stands out against the scenery and shows the scale of the surroundings. A good composition and a great portrayal of the location.

A well taken shot with interesting light and contrasting elements. The dark and gloomy sky makes an intriguing backdrop for the warm light bathing the scene. As well as providing a unique moment in the desert setting. The sculptured looking trees are definitely the star of the show. The way the taller one extends above the rocky background into the dark sky helps set their details apart from the rocks, as the smaller one does get lost a little. A great expression of the landscape!

A gorgeous long exposure seascape! I really like the warm light bathing the rocks in the bottom right was well as the way it adds shape and depth to the rocks in the water. The colour of the clouds compliments the tones in the water. The lighthouse stands tall and clearly defines what this image is about. Because of the overall professionalism of the shot. The exposure, the focus, composition. A very minor detail that once seen cannot be unseen. The lighthouse is centred, but it's not centred. The slight placement to the left is visually jarring to someone looking at the image with a critical eye. It can be addressed with a very small crop adjustment, or other techniques in post processing software. I only bring it up because the image is taken so well that the photographer might appreciate the finer points of improvement. Great shot and I look forward to seeing your work in further contests!

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

A lovely calming scene. The pastel colour palette gives the image a softness that adds to the tranquil feel. Two clusters of rocks mirror each other at the edge of the frame, adding a symmetry that matches the centred horizon. A gentle reflection of the clouds in the water give the sea a silky texture. Well done!

A wonderful panorama with lots to explore. The bright light of the sun is balanced well on the opposite side with the land and hills it is illuminating. The clusters of houses seem to be hiding in the shadows of the hills to escape the main feature of the image, the flood. What initially looks like a picturesque lakeside scene takes on a devastating nature as realisation sets in. The brighter areas of water in the distance help draw the eye into the scene and show the viewer the extent of the flooding. There is so much to explore in the shot from the farms, scattered settlements, and even the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Getting a good exposure for the Milky Way and the foreground can be challenging. You've done a great job at balancing the exposure across the image, including the dark of the sky and the bright lighthouse. I like the little details such as the spotlight reflecting off the nails in the boardwalk, mimicking the reflection of stars in the water. The focus is spot on too. Well done!

I can see what you are going for with this shot. The lighting conditions are amazing and the vantage point of the camera provides an interesting view of the landscape. The gentle warm light pushing through the dark clouds and bathing the grass is nice too. My main concern is that there isn't a clear feature at the focal point. I feel a super close focus on the grass or further in the scene at the trees or hills would have elevated the shot. You still have a great eye for interesting conditions and composition. Well done!

A great shot of the Golden Gate Bridge in gorgeous warm light, with an almost vintage film look. The overall balance of shapes and colours works well. Even the bare ground in the foreground works as a sponge for warm light. The oranges and reds stand out brilliantly against the clear blue sky. While I like the human figure in the scene and even the pose, the positioning of them about to walk out of the frame is a little distracting. A minor point on a image that overall has an uplifting feel. Well done!

There is really beautiful calming and tranquil mood to this image. The muted tones and bright highlights give it a dreamlike feel. While the vertical dimensions to give the photo an openness, a square crop in the centre area would provide a refined finish while retaining the inherent qualities. Lovely shot!

A great example of a detailed, intriguing scene up close, and an eye catching abstract from far away. The dark silhouetted appearing tree immediately catches the viewers eye and acts as an anchor for the centre of the image. We can then explore the rest of the snowy landscape to the line of bristled grass in the foreground and the crowd of trees along the hillside in the background. From afar the photo would retain the circular shape of the tree and the straight line of the grass with a random scattering of texture around them. Bringing people in for a closer look. Great job!

A beautiful countryside scene with a unique building nestled in a bed of autumn trees. I really like the colours and subject matter of this photo. The slightly out of focus foreground helps lead the eye into the scene and up to the bright reflection of sky in the structures window. The main colours of the scene crowd around the building giving it more character and interest. I would suggest playing around with different crops to really draw attention to this photo. Anything from a tighter crop with the same aspect and orientation, to a much tighter landscape orientation that cuts out the sky entirely and most of the foreground. A beautiful scene with plenty to work with!
