Sometimes landscape images take in the whole vista, with a definitive foreground, mid ground and background. Sometimes the composition is more simple than that and the photographer hones in on a detailed section of a wider landscape. You have employed the latter technique in this image, concentrating on the snowy peak of the mountain and framing it in contrast with the overcast sky and the darker landscape beneath the snow line. What makes the image for me is that line of low cloud drifting along the middle of the frame.

Well seen, thank you for sharing.

A classic landscape/waterscape that does what it sets out to do and makes the most of the conditions.

Foggy and misty conditions like this are the bread and butter for landscape photographers. Nothing makes us leap out of bed faster than the promise of a misty sunrise. In this image, the mist is particularly thick and does a really good job of separating the foreground from the background. We have a hint of the far shoreline, but the main focal point is the boats.

I like the panoramic framing, although I would have tired to place the horizon a little more in the middle so the reflection of the mast was visible in full. That aside, I like that there is a hint of the sky reflecting in the water and the soft touch processing really elevates the atmosphere.

Nicely seen, captured and processed, thank you for sharing.

This is a wonderful, wintery scene that demonstrates why we landscape photographers love this time of the year so much.

I like that you've lent into the cool tones of the scenery, and brought them to the foreground, enhancing the wintery feel to the composition.

The 1:1 square framing works well, helped by your thoughtful positioning of the elements from bottom to top. The woodland at the bottom of the frame leads the eye to the many layers in the landscape that are separated by the low mist. This in turn gives way to the mountain range in the middle of the frame. There is arguably too much of the frame given over to the sky, but in this case it works because of the tree on the left side of the image. I really like that the bottom branch of the tree isn't touching the top of the mountain range, a small but imperative detail.

The sky is full of texture because of the cloud base and all in all this is a class image and a worthy winner, thank you for sharing.

There is something magical about this image, like it could have been plucked from a fantasy novel or an epic movie. The cinematic quality to the frame is aided by the strong lighting that is illuminating the landscape and the hint of atmospheric conditions giving the scenery as sort of hazy feel.

I like the colour combination of vibrant green on the cliff side and the deeper blues in the water. This is in contrast with the brown of the rock formations in the distance.

The composition works well, leaving enough sky in to add scale and interest but allowing the landscape to fill much of the frame. The detail that makes this image, however, is the sheep in the foreground. You've done well to capture it looking directly at you. Its presence just adds some narrative and it gives the image a focal point.

Well seen, captured and processed, thank you for sharing.

It's a really interesting choice to process an image of a waterfall in monochrome. I see many images of waterfalls when judging contests such as this one, but very few photographers have had the creative urge to convert to black and white, unless the image leans towards the more fine art end of the spectrum.

Just by making this style choice alone makes the image stand out and therefore invites the viewer to take a closer look. The composition works well, especially as you're concentrating on the waterfall and the surrounding rocks, excluding the sky or anything else that might have been a distraction.

The shutter speed of 20 seconds is enough of a long exposure to add some movement and narrative to the water, but not too much as to lose all texture. The monochrome processing really helps to show off the difference between the shadows and the highlights.

A intriguing, impactful image, thank you for sharing.

There are certain situations where the rule of thirds was meant to be broken, and there is no better opportunity to break the rule than then there is the opportunity to photograph a really satisfying reflection.

In this image, the still water of the lake makes the reflection absolutely wonderful, and thankfully you don't miss the chance to show off the mirrored image of the landscape in all its glory.

I like the cool tones of the image, with the trees silhouetted against the snow smattered mountain in the distance. The mist rising from the water really adds to the atmosphere and although there is a lack of light, there is plenty here to enjoy.

Well seen and captured, thank you for sharing.

This is a classic landscape image that works with all the elements in the frame to create something delightful.

The sloping rocks in the foreground have a relationship to the rocks in the mid ground that are sloping in the opposite direction, connected by the shoreline that curves its way through the image. In the distance there is a mirage of the distant shore, hills and mountains rising above the mist to reveal themselves against the blue sky.

There would have been too much sky at the top of the frame if it wasn't for the high cloud that adds some texture and ends up balancing out the composition.

The image benefits from the soft processing and overall this works really well, thank you for sharing.

Meet the expert judge

Sometimes including a human in a landscape image enhances the frame, and this is exactly what is happening with this image. Although the landscape itself has some merit, with the greenery of the hill contrasting with the blue of the sky, containing only a few little clouds, it lacks a focal point. The inclusion of the walkers provides that focal point, and it also gives the image a sense of narrative and scale.

The cross-processing colouration of the image gives it a nostalgic feel, and overall this works well. Thanks for sharing.

I see lots of images depicting these rock formations while judging these contests and they never fail to impress me. I can imagine it was even more amazing to witness them in real life.

Often I see sunset shots of this location so it's nice to see a sunrise, looking in the other direction. I like that the two rocks seem to be facing each other, silhouetted against the warmth of the low sun. The gradient in the sky is delightful and my only gripe is that the rock on the left of the frame feels too close to the edge of the frame so the composition feels a little uncomfortable.

That aside, this is a lovely, atmospheric image, thank you for sharing.

There its something cinematic about this image. There is a lot of noise and grain which gives the impression that it was shot on film, although that is not something you mention in the brief description. To me, the grain and the filmic quality really elevate the image and give it a sense of nostalgia.

Above and beyond the style of the image, the composition works really well. I like that you've gone for a panoramic aspect ratio, placing the landscape right at the bottom of the frame and giving the rest over to the sky. I don't know if it is sunrise or sunset, but the warm glow of a low sun brings colour and warmth, cutting through the cooler tones that dominant.

A majestic image that would look great on someone's wall. Thanks for sharing.

Waterfall shots are the bread and butter for landscape photographers because they offer up the opportunity to deploy a long exposure, adding narrative and movement to a still image. This helps to elevate an image that is otherwise static, and it can be a viable subject in all weathers, particular overcast conditions like we can see in this image.

The overcast conditions ensure that the tones are even throughout and there is a balance between the highlights and the shadows. Your composition aids the impact of the image, particularly the portrait orientation and the inclusion of the log at the top of the frame. I'd be inclined to have cropped out some of the bottom of the frame as it doesn't add anything to the image.

That aside, there is plenty to enjoy here, thank you for sharing.

This image is all about the layers in the landscape. The composition is aided by your choice of portrait orientation which ensures that all the elements in the frame have a place and there is a natural flow to the image,

The monochrome processing emphasises the different layers, something that might have been less evident if you've processed the image in colour. The dark woodland at the bottom of the frame is offset by the different tones in the layers that exist above. The mountain range adds some texture, as does the cloud base at the top of the frame. The mist in the middle does a really good job of delineating between the top and bottom of the image.

A quiet image that has a lot of impact. Thank you for sharing.

This is an impressive moonscape that you've managed to capture. It looks enormous in contrast to the mountain range that sits below it. I like that you can see the detail of the moon surface.

The colours contrast well with each other, from the red/brown colours of the mountains to the clear blue sky that hosts the moon. The telephoto composition works well, but unfortunately zooming in so much has meant there is a drop off in quality so the moon and the mountains are a little fuzzy around the edges.

That doesn't effect the atmosphere and mood of the image, which is wonderful. An impressive shot, thank you for sharing.

There is something appealing about an empty road that leads off into the distance, especially when the distance in question includes an epic mountain range. It speaks to a sense of adventure and puts us in mind of road trip movies.

It's an effective narrative tool and in this instance is elevated further by the monochrome conversion. The colours in this image might have been a little overwhelming, so converting to monochrome means that we can concentrate fully on the composition, the highlights complementing the shadows.

The composition itself works well, with the line of the road leading the eye to the landscape in the distance. There is plenty to enjoy here, thank you for sharing.

I think this image could be easily overlooked and dismissed, but there was something about it that encouraged me to take a closer look.

Landscapes do not exist in isolation, they have been shaped by humans and we are all part of the ecosystem in one way or another. Because of that, I'm not a purest when it comes to landscape photography and occasionally enjoy images that include humans.

Your image is a good example of this in action. The image itself has an appeal, with the yellow foreground, smattering of snow and the mountain range in the distance. However, the inclusion of the man carrying bags and the horse in the distance, really adds some narrative and scale to the scenery. I particularly like the contrast of the red clothing against the yellow landscape.

I'd be inclined to crop out the majority of the sky as it adds little to the image and unbalances the composition. It would be interesting to see how it looks as a 1:1 square crop.

Nicely done, thanks for sharing.
