Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Landscapes’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

A wonderful splash of golden light on an otherwise gloomy rugged landscape. With the vantage point of the photographer within the shadow portion of the scene, the distant warmth of light creates a longing for the viewer, pulling them into the image. Small features such as the path on the left and the fence leading to the waters edge provide a sense of scale. Although much of the land is in darkness, there are still details to be found, showing a good control of exposure. Well done!

You have a great eye to see a well balanced reflection shot. The horizon line is well placed in the centre to capture the full effect of the reflected shore and towering mountains. The green and blue colours go well together and the light ripple on the waters surface adds extra interest and texture to the scene. Well done!

A beautiful story captured in an interesting way. Using the vegetation and depth of field to your advantage has paid off well here, immediately focusing attention on the silhouetted human figure fishing on the shore. The glistening sun shining through the palms and reflecting on the water adds to the quiet moment presented to us. A well composed and imagination provoking landscape photo!

An expansive panorama of Machu Picchu. The bright light has provided loads of shadows and contrast in the scene that is well suited for black and white photography. While it is good to see more of the mountains surrounding the iconic site, the interest of the buildings and contrast in that area do make the image heavily weighted to the right side of the frame. Still a well taken photo with lots to explore!

A nice black and white scene with lots of detail and a well balanced reflection. The bright sunny day provides plenty of contrast, ideal for a monochrome image. The horizon line is well positioned in the frame to give equal emphasis to the trees and their reflections. The little ripple in the bottom left is a nice touch too.

A beautifully bright and vibrant image of an inviting countryside. The road does well to catch the viewers attention and pull it into the scene. There is plenty of depth with the trees in the foreground and distant mountains in the background. A keen eye might even spot the animal grazing in exact centre of the landscape. While the photo does look good in the vertical orientation, I feel like you could crop it to a landscape orientation of with about 1/3 sky and 2/3 land to get even more out of the scene.

A beautiful long exposure waterfall scene. The timing of the shutter is just enough to smooth out some of the water detail while still keeping a sense of power to the cascade. While there is a slight loss of highlight detail in the brightest parts of the water, the rest of the shot is full of texture and vibrant greens. There is also some natural framing of the waterfall with the surrounding vegetation. Great work!

You've used the path to great effect here, leading the eye into the scene towards the looming rugged mountain. The texture and details on the rocks provide abstract chaos that plays well with the repeating shapes of the trees at its base. Another option would be a tighter crop of the scene with the same aspect ratio, removing about half of the boardwalk and the logs by its side, which would give the mountain and even more immense presence. Still a great shot. Well done!

A good use of the rule of thirds, separating a soft focus foreground, an intriguing midground, and a bright and vast background. The layers presented in the middle of the frame add loads of depth to the scene. There is a point at which the shape of the terrain and the atmospheric haze create pseudo bokeh, further playing with the minds perception of depth and scale.

A lovely glimpsed view of a towering peak. The bright sunlit snow dusted mountain top immediately attracts the viewers attention. This is accentuated by the soft focus trees on either side acting as a natural frame for the main subject. The fog/cloud in the bottom of the frame also adds to the overall feeling of a fleeting moment captured by the photographer.

A wonderful long exposure of this lakeside marina. The water has taken on a frosted glass texture, reflecting the gorgeous warm to cool gradient in the sky. The beached boat in the foreground adds a layer of depth and interest to the scene. Silhouetted trees along the curved hillside divided the land and sky. I love the rich colours and textures throughout the photo. Well done!

A nice view over the fields of corn with blue hued soft clouds almost looking like a clear blue sky. The scene is simple in composition, yet holds lots of details in the immediate foreground, which the viewer can then extrapolate over the rest of the gentle hillside. A calming rural landscape photo with an engaging sense of place.

A well structured panorama that gives a sense of actually being there. The rocky path in the bottom left does a great job of catching the eye and guiding it along and around the peninsula. The tree on the right and the hill on the left hold the sides of the frame and prevent the eye from trailing off the horizon. Well done!

A beautiful sunset over this iconic skyline. The World Trade Centre Tower breaks through the horizon line, bridging the city and sky. Lights shine throughout the buildings and streets like a starry night sky. The warm coloured gradient and clouds provide plenty of interest in the top half of the frame. My only minor suggestion would be to straighten the horizon line ever so slightly.

I love the spattering of flowers in the foreground, getting denser towards a vast field of yellow. I feel like you have 2 good photos here, that may not work as well combined. The path on the left keeps the eye drawn in that direction, and away from the distant fields. I recommend cropping the image right down the middle into two photos and seeing how each one works well on its own.
