New Joiners - People #402

February 2022

There is a blissful narrative being told in this expertly composed scene. The rich atmosphere has been carefully considered. The shadow areas around the edge of the composition make a lovely framing device. The summer vibe is the perfect antidote to looking at these images as storm Eunice lashes against my windows. Nice work!

A slick and accomplished portrait oozing with a cool, composed style. The subtle lighting has been artfully handled with just enough separation from the subject's clothing and the background to create a sense of depth and intrigue. Great work, keep it up!

A clever image that works on many levels. In the first instance the angle of view looking down on the street scene was inspired, but using the decorative glass to create a distorted and painterly impression was the icing on the cake.

What a fun and engaging image. Lovely to see the breaking down of stereotypes and for children to see that this can be cool and fun. Good parenting IMHO. Photographically the low angle works very well and the black and white treatment gives it a 'documentary' tone, lovely work.

A fascinating image that works on many levels. It is a strange image to 'read' as the modern architecture in the background stands in stark contrast to the 1920s elegant vibe of the main subject. This creates an interesting tension. The mono conversation and handling of the tones are pitch perfect.

Despite the lack of actual people in this image I love their implied presence through the laundry hanging on the washing line. A beautifully observed scene that shows a great sense of design. The vibrant colours are dynamic and eye-catching. Good work!

Excellent control and understanding of shutter speed to create an interesting and engaging image. There is just enough movement in the walking people to create a sense of energy and motion. There's a lovely and perfectly timed break in the crowd which reveals the couple quietly observing from the background.

At first, I wondered why this image was in the "people' category, then I noticed the very small figure on the left side of the frame which adds a haunting human presence. The placing of the figure in the composition, which challenges convention, reveals the subject looking out of the frame which creates a lovely sense of tension. The grainy and gritty mono conversion finishes it off wonderfully.

Good use of negative space in this sparce but highly effective composition. The range of textures works well. The interaction between the subjects feels very natural and is well observed. The handling of the black and white tones has been done with skill.

There is a wonderful energy in this image. The tonality has been carefully handled and the colour palette is sublime. Positioning the subject in the middle of the composition and the low angle of view helps create a strong and powerful portrait.

A fascinating image, that is quite difficult to 'read' and unravel. This is what makes it interesting and intriguing. I'm not certain how the narrative is unfolding and what the relationship is between the biker and the boys playing basketball but I like that and that it makes me think.

A wonderful image packed with atmosphere. Shooting into the light (contre jour) has created a lovely rim light around the main subject and a beautiful sense of depth with just enough detail retained in the shadow areas. This isn't easy as camera meters are easily fooled.

I love the arrangement of this image and the fact that absolutely no one seems to be aware of the camera. The mass of darkness from the UPS van creates a useful 'negative space' that artfully balances the chaos of the street scene.

I love the slightly surreal vibe going on in this unusual image. The playful point of view works very well and the lovely shapes made through the reflections, refractions and ripples work well. The black and white treatment has been well handled too. Nice work!
