April 2023

Like this young man we are always drawn to the sea and the crashing waves. This is a great example where we get to see what the person in the frame is looking at. That is not a spoiler but a wonderful and clever visual device to bring us closer to the image and the scene unfolding. We cant hear the waves or the wind but we can imagine them and that is what a great photograph does. It includes us and allows us to think about the actual elements within the frame. Well done.

The photographer has used the elevation of the ground very well to place emphasis on the main subject which is this dramatic ancient ruin. The amount of people visiting the space tells us the viewer this is an important historical site and gives a sense of scale to the building by incorporating the tourists within the picture. The muted true colors work well and allow us to really look at the wonderful building without the distraction of color. A great photograph of a site worth preserving.

The never ending lavender works so well as does the blur of the flowers in the foreground as they take our eye into the main scene and then the person taking a selfie. Why not as the color and space are so rich for a photograph. The rim light on the hair is golden and really adds the extra warmth to the entire image. I'd love to see the picture that the woman is taking but we never will. What we do get is a great capture and well considered and vibrant photograph. Stunning.

Great use of perspective within this image. We are drawn to the woman in the mask through the out of focus top and neck of the person blurred in the foreground. Even though they take up over 50% of the entire image area we are completely focused on the woman in the mask and her wonderful hand gesture that keeps out attention focused on her. I love the man in the background looking on at what the photographer sees, We then get this wonderful reveal of the small boy looking intently into the camera. A lovely photograph that really does hold our attention. Well done. A great candid portrait within the street.

It would have been easy for the photographer to fill the scene with the women in the picture but by choosing to place her to the right of the frame we get to fully understand her expression and the environment she is in. Her expression is dreamlike and now we the viewer get that sense of tranquility with her because the photographer has allowed us this access. The lovely color switch between the blue of the top and greens of the wood work well together as they are balanced within nature and for that reason work so very well. Great candid environmental portrait.

A very clean and clever use of perspective and low camera angles to really drive this powerful photograph. We know who is in charge and the team working hard behind the main figure centrally placed. The green in the shorts really adds that additional pop of color against the blue in the sky. It has a feel of a staged photograph because the balance across all the figures works so very well. I don't think this is the case. This is just a great example of a photographer knowing the subject very well and in complete control of all the elements. Great capture.

This wonderful scene feels staged. The perfect composition of the single figure beautifully illuminated to the left of the image as we then follow these wonderful arches of light cast onto the floor.. We never get to meet another person and this isolation of the figure really draws our attention to the details within the space. Our eye is cast across the entire image and it just keeps going. The use of Black and White adds additional drama and highlights the graphic quality of the architecture. A great capture.

This image is full of drama that has been heightened by the use of light across the main individual been thrown by the crowd below against the darkened corner where the light is obscured by buildings. This dramatic photograph is caught so well by the photographer and keeping detail in the shadow areas is not an easy thing, given the need to keep a fast shutter speed to capture the man in flight. We get to look at these wonderful colors against what is a monochromatic background and they work so well in this situation. A well captured image.

Such a wonderful formal composition. It takes real bravery and confidence to fill the frame with something that is blank. It works for several reasons. Firstly the mask worn suggests this image was taken whist covid was at its height. We could then read the painting as a canvas to add our own thoughts. The hues of fawn work so well across the frame and give balance to the photograph. The wonderful patterns on the individuals jacket are as interesting as the paintings. It has great balance overall and is a very well judged photograph.

Great composer and stunning technique are the main hallmarks of this vibrant portrait capturing a person, perhaps in dancer in full flight. The low camera angle adds additional drama to the image as does the intentionally out of focus background highlighting the main person within the photograph. The colors on the dress work so well against the white sky and add that additional pop pf color. The light of the face really gives the image a lift and keeps out attention in that spot. Great technique and a fun image. Very well constructed.

The vignetting in the corners brings all the attention to the center and the little girl caught in the middle of the frame. This is a dream like photograph from the warm even light to the house in the background that reminds me of the Walton's. It takes us back to a simpler time. A happy time that is quiet and peaceful. This is a photograph that demonstrates that perfectly and works very well because of that. It's a photograph that is easy to enjoy and bring a smile to our face..

Beautifully controlled technique and colors using photo-shop in a subtle way to enhance what is already a striking and visually impactful photograph. Wonderful eye contact with the main subject who is perfectly balanced between the persons either side of her. The tight crop means we really focus on her flawless skin and incredible headware and costumes. The hand gestures just add that additional formal placing again which emphasis the main subject. A stunning portrait and worthy winner, Very well done.

Great photographs are as much about light as they are about subject matter and this photograph has both. The illumination across the face really brings the detail out of the eye, so much so that we feel it piercing straight at us. The shallow depth of field within the blurred background works so well and keeps our attention in the face. The color palette works so well from the brown of the top to the deep plum in the background. The tight crop again brings the attention to the face. A very well considered photograph and a stunning portrait.

This is a great example of an environmental portrait. The photographer has taken several steps back to include the entire workplace. The use of a wide angle lens gets in all the relevant information and the colors work well together from the neon of the light to the daylight coming in from the left hand side. It is evenly lit which is not an easy thing to do under the lighting conditions and the photographer has shown their ability to control the situation to a very high standard. We then have this great scene of the man working in an industrial setting. A great capture of a worker.

I love wicked Alice. The blues coming through against the haze of light in the top corner and vignetting around the frame, the modern touches like the tattoo on the arm and shoulder add a contemporary feel as does the blood across the face and chest. The tight crop works well as does the arm coming down and the one next to the earring is lovely and adds a cinematic touch. This is a guilty pleasure and a lovely photograph.
